The Gathering Storm (2002)
Churchill is brought back to life.
This is a movie that captures the life of Sir Winston Churchill before he became Prime Minister of England in 1940. The period the movie covers is approximately from 1936-1939. The story is of a private and complex man trying desperately to fight for what he believes in.
Albert Finney delivers a gem of a performance as Winston Churchill and steals the show. His role is central to the story and he is equal to the task in every way. Finney does an excellent job of portraying Churchill as a hard-nosed politician, an admirable statesman and England patriot who was also a kind hearted, sensitive man in his fifties who just wanted to "Keep Buggering On". Finney succeeds in bringing intense humanity and intimacy to the character of an immensely public figure.
This is a must see for those interested in Winston Churchill and WWII; it is an excellent prequel to the war itself since it lays the groundwork for many of the struggles within British society itself over the prospect of war with Germany. Excellent movie.

Spider (2002)
Excellent movie.
This is an excellent movie to say the least. Ralph Fiennes (Spider) turns in an amazing Oscar caliber performance that sees him enact the life story of a mentally disabled individual. Cronenberg (Director) has once again directed a movie that leaves the viewer with as many questions as it does answers. Deciphering this movie takes patience; each scene had its own significance that leads to the ultimate climax. Miranda Richardson (Spider's mother) is also amazing in this movie. Her role gives the movie life and makes it more 'audible'. However, Fiennes is the crowning jewel in this beautifully crafted movie that left me spellbound for hours. He has given us some powerful performances before, but I think that this would count as one of his best ever.
This is a powerful movie. A must see for those who love deep, complex, meaningful movies and good acting. Beautiful Art.

The Quiet American (2002)
Great Movie. Highly Recommended.
I just saw this movie and I must say that it was very enjoyable. Michael Caine is undoubtedly a great actor and though this might not be his best performance, it is certainly high up on the list. Even Brendan Fraser delivers a great performance that I never knew he could pull off. His role in conjunction with that of the lead actress cements this movie as one to remember. This is a movie that utilises a great plot, some amazing writing by Graham Greene and a very straightforward directorial style to get its message across about a war and time that is usually polluted with strong opinions and unnecessary violence when portrayed by Hollywood. Thoroughly enjoyable and recommended as a sophisticated and thought provoking movie to watch.
