The 15:17 to Paris (2018)
Not a Movie More a Documentary on Finding Purpose or It Finding You
My initial thought as the movie rolled out was, I can relate to these boys. They didn't fit in, were on the outside of the circle and only had each other. As the movie moved on, I related to their search to not only belong but find that "something"most young look for. Finally, the issue of failures and closing of paths to life, although hard to live with, proved the stuff that over came the situation. No never knows what life has in story for them or how the tools to succeed will be provided.
Hostiles (2017)
A Physiological Western but Not an Eastwood/Wayne Action Story
Just saw the movie and in short it was a physiological western. I would not recommend it to the younger set as a source of entertainment but to the old set with knowledge on the scares of life; an interesting movie. It did move slow, lacked the normal Hollywood background music building emotional intensity but did offer some great scenery. A story of guilty, former enemies joining to fight a current common foe, those living lives built on violence and shame, etc. A good "one time" movie but certainly not a John Wayne or Clintwood action picture.
Darkest Hour (2017)
See It !
As a History Buff, I am well aware of Churchill and his role in WWII. I was not aware of the internal intentions brought out in the movie. True or False, the movie was well done and moved along at a good pace. In fact, i thought a 2hr+ movie would really drag, which it didn't. Oldman's performance was excellent not to mention the make-up. I really had to look at the close-ups to see any sign of his normal look. See the movie
They Were Expendable (1945)
Required Watching
As a veteran and history buff, I've always felt this movie should be required viewing for middle/high school history classes. As a product of the aging Baby Boom years, it appears most younger Americans deem us as an invincible and all powerful nation. We are and have been for decades but even in the prewar 1930's we positioned ourselves for 6 to 12 months of heavy loses, questioning final victory against the Japanese. Never again let us be so confident of ourselves and our abilities as to enter a war as unprepared and untrained as we did World War I and II. If your not speaking German or Japanese, thank a veteran, possibly your grandfather.
Read the original book to find how dark those days were. As I recall the forward states it was drafted over a bar.
'Northwest Passage' (Book I -- Rogers' Rangers) (1940)
Just Enjoy It!
I've been watching this movie occasionally since 1950, whenever it was on. It has all the attributes of a classic, scenery, music and strong acting not to mention the display of core American values and early American hardiness. It still fascinates me to think of New York as the edge of the frontier. The story is accentuated by the fact I have visited the Hudson River area up to Fort Ticonderoga and the difference between this area and New York City is simply beyond comparison. If I have any criticism of this movie it is my wish the movie name had been more appropriate to the story and the related historic expedition. It is a great movie in the tradition of all great movies, simply entertaining! What A Great Movie!
Unconquered (1947)
Enjoy it for what it is!
I find all the criticism of the movie amusing! Lack of accents, the choice of Paulette Goddard, etc., you folks are missing the point. It is a great movie in the tradition of all great movies, simply entertaining! I watched this as a kid in the 50's and still enjoy the story of Fort Pitt at the edge of the end of civilization. The story was accentuated by the fact I had an uncle living in Pittsburgh and every time I visited him the though of Indians, the frontier and colonists came to the forefront of my mind.
Think Indiana Jones, sit back with your popcorn and simply enjoy the movie!
