MIA (2019)
Uplifting and inspiring
Just loved that heartfelt story of second chances and restart. Beautifully told by Galia Barkol.
Back to Berlin (2018)
Heroic and poignant
An incredible lesson in human courage and resilience. Back to Berlin sheds light on an historic episode unknow of many. A must see for all generations.
S'ids Lake (2019)
Dark and tense
Strong and subtle drama with a skillfully built in suspense and tension. Compelling performance by Kristian Pierce!
Turnover (2019)
A feel good comedy with depth
Had a really good time watching TURNOVER with my wife. This is a multi-layered story with great performances and a very entertaining pace. Kudos to Linda Palmer for this beautiful celebration of the human spirit!
Lemonheads (2020)
A punch in the face
Lemonheads won't leave you indifferent. It's an intense dive into the dark depths of addiction with top-notch performances and beautiful photography. A subtle character study that's never preachy nor complacent. Bravo!
Blood from Stone (2020)
Total Badassery!
An original take on the vampire genre, Blood from Stone is a cleaver and beautifully shot indie film. Vanja Kapetanovic brings great charisma to the screen and delivers one hell of a performance. The gore action is top notch but the film goes deeper and offers complex characters as well as a bold ending:)
Kensho at the Bedfellow (2017)
Spontaneous awakening on film
Kensho at the Bedfellow is a prototype of a personal drama, nothing like any other. It is introspective and emotional, sensual and philosophical. Yet it never feels preachy or abstract as we're grounded in the reality of New York city maelstrom vibe as well as in the mental journey of the main character Dan. Brad Raider who plays the lead man and direct at the same time is extremely charismatic with a unique blend of electric presence and too cool for school nonchalance. His co-star Kayle Ronayne is a total sweetheart and her character brings a welcome elevation early on in the movie. She is the mind opening to the world and the wider struggles of humanity, helping the hero to relate his mental state to the rest of mankind. Aaron Gilhuis wrote an intense score that sucks you down the rabbit hole with Dan and his struggles with sexuality, the NYC night underworld and his own chakras. Very clean and subtle photography by David Rodriguez. From the very granular and personal to the deep and universal, Kensho at the Bedfellow is a revelation that will challenge, surprise and touch.
Nicole (2019)
Aesthetic female lead horror film
I love the final twist in the film. The alternating effect between the black and white and color shots, the reality and the mental state is a really well executed cinematographic proposition. We get into Nicole's brain, for better or for worse (:) and the suspense is well built-up and maintained throughout. Tamika Shannon burns the screen in the lead role.
The Crumbs (2020)
Great atmospherical horror
This is a very raw and granular horror indie film. I decided to take a chance and was pleasantly surprised. It has a unique vintage photography that gives it a disturbing visual atmosphere. Great acting and good plot twists keep you invested till the very end.
The Stand Up Doll (2019)
Inspiring life lessons
A character larger than life for an elegant, subtle and deep documentary film. Risa will make you reconsider some choices and look back at the past with empathy and resilience. The Holocaust and her escape from Germany were formative and defining moments but she somehow manages to look beyond her sufferings and embrace humanity with a sense of appeasement and benevolent satisfaction. Beautiful film really.
Older (2020)
Indie rom-com with depth
Older is a beautifully shot indie rom-com with very real and relatable characters. On-camera chemistry works well and the film manages to maintain a good balance between the sweet romantic moments and the deeper dramatic undertones. Well done overall.
The Stalker (2020)
Tight Thriller with a Haunting Soundtrack
Fast paced horror thriller flick with a vintage feel and a very hypnotic sound track John Giorgio will be one director to follow.
Sweet Sunshine (2020)
Poignant and uplifting
If you are in this place in your life where what you've fought so hard to accomplish is taken away from you for no apparent reason, this will help you finding sense. The country music is great and even the dad who always trying to pull the hero from his dream is actually authentically endearing and full of loving feelings. Sweet Sunshine will pursue a fate that was denied to him by circumstances and he will feel accomplishment from her success. Love is the answer. Inspiring.
Dirty Beautiful (2015)
Endearing Misfits Rom-Com
An introvert wannabe screenplay writer meets a wild homeless girl and the most unexpected love story ensues. The movie is a very intimate look at these 2 outsiders healing their wounds together. It's raw and authentic and Tim Bartell does a great job at making us root for these guys. Jordan Monaghan burns the screen with her very solar performance as Kat. On the melancholy and reflexive side of rom-com, Dirty Beautiful is a little gem.
Trouble Is My Business (2018)
Stylish modern film noir
A detective, his office, two femmes fatales, smoke, borsalinos, dialogues in a static car with moving backgrounds, angled camera work and some dramatic extreme close-ups. Trouble is My Business is an impeccably mastered tribute to the noir genre. I loved the composition of shots and the editing style, this guy really studied the masters and gave an original take on the detective/crime movie.
