Generation Um... (2012)
Surprising and unusual film
Like many I was put off watching this film as it had poor reviews. It is slow and ponderous and I can see how it must have tested many people's patience. That said, it really drew me in and I thought it was insightful and lifelike. I became terminally bored of Hollywood blockbusters a good while back now so I really welcome downbeat, understated, true life studies which is what this film is. The film within the a film device worked for me and I thought it was an effective way to create some confessional dialogue and to give insight into the principle characters. I also really enjoyed Keanu Reeves' performance, it was a brave choice of role in that the film's style is naked and unflattering. Well worth a watch and a second watch even.
Performance (1970)
Excellent, ground breaking, shocking, entertaining
Have been a huge fan of this movie since I first saw it about 30 years ago. It captures the mayhem of the time and brings together a Brit gangster movie with the psychedelic world of reclusive, faded rock star chic. I simply love everything about this film; James Fox is magnificent as a sadistic on the run gangster and Jagger does what he does best to a sizzling soundtrack of period music. So many firsts here... from the Moog synthesiser, the mixture of genres, its use of imagery, is that the first rap song? .. and more. The ending is a little confused but the whole thing is a feast for the senses, you can't guess what will happen next.
They dared to try out lots of new ideas and combine many different styles.. it really works and defies categorisation to this day.. a masterpiece!
Twin Town (1997)
Absolutely brilliant, unique and under rated movie
This is one of my favourite all time films, it is funny, irreverent, unexpected, gritty, real in a surreal way and very very funny. Maybe not everyone got it.. maybe not everyone has been to Wales.. but it captures it so accurately, in a comic book yet real way. It is full of tender moments as well as being brutal and immoral. So many jokes, so many visual gags, and so many really warm and well imagined characters. It is two fingers up to Hollywood, to formulaic movies.. it is in a whole new genre of it own.
From the very first scene to its finale it is rich in entertainment, shock, surprise, humour and emotion. This is such a good film... I love it!
Un long dimanche de fiançailles (2004)
A feast for the senses
Like many others i don't doubt, I watched this expecting to re-experience some of the joys and fun of Amelie. And I guess in some ways it does touch on some similar themes but this is also such a different film, it really is a masterpiece all in its own right.
Wonderfully constructed, beautifully filmed, with an extraordinary sense of detail. It recreates the horror, absurdity and futility of war magnificently, juxtaposed by the love and hope of a beautiful and captivating young woman.
Beautiful and romantic, nostalgic, funny and yet it captures real passion and fear. A feast for the senses.
