Trip to Bhangarh: Asia's Most Haunted Place (2014)
Good for chilled out Netflixing
I remember watching the trailer for this one back in 2014 as a fresher working the graveyard shift: I added it to the informal watch list in my head and promptly forgot all about it, especially since I don't remember ever seeing the theatrical release. Oh well.
More than three years later, here we are: netflixing this on Saturday night.
Definitely, this is an indie production done on a limited budget with new actors: it might be a good idea to set your expectations accordingly.
To the first reviewer above, I disagree when he/she says that the group of friends didn't have any chemistry. I think they did! PJs or no, that's exactly how my friends speak to each other, the exact same kind of double entendres and innuendos.
I found the actors themselves to be quite attractive in an earthy, normal way: nothing too airbrushed and perfect like we see in more mainstream movies. (Looking at you, Pyaar ka Punchnama 2)
The production values were...nice...quite organic and polished given its budget. I quite liked that it was rather low-key and natural: several shots had the guys with unseemly sweat patches on their shirts. (And that's OK: that's *exactly* what happens when you go out on road trips in Indian weather)
Given all of the above, I do agree that the film meandered quite a bit and couldn't seem to make up its mind: is it supernatural horror or a thriller or both or neither?
I feel it may have worked better as a mini-series than a film.
Nowhere Boys (2013)
Very Pleasantly Surprised
At the outset, I should mention that this review is only for the first two seasons: I fell in love with the original cast and I refuse to watch the third season which replaces all my favourite actors.
I remember watching the first episode sometime way back in 2013 or 2014 (around the time when it first aired, I should think) and then promptly forgot all about it. (I'm in India where it's rather difficult to come across Australian programming)
I found this again on Netflix two weeks back and I was hooked!
No praise is enough for the crackling cast: and they're so young! As far as I could see, they more or less were the age their characters were: and that was such a pleasant surprise compared to the 30 year old's playing at 16 on the CW (*cough* Vampire Diaries *cough*) Everybody played their parts amazingly well with no hint of camera awkwardness etc. A talented, good-looking bunch of young men and women- I hope they'll go really far in the industry.
I'd also like to commend the writers for creating really down-to- Earth characters (no angst-for-the-sake-of-angst nonsense American teen shows indulge in) who were likable! I loved seeing teens with more-or-less well adjusted lives with the usual problems with relationships; because that's what reality is usually like, right? I genuinely grew fond of the characters and rooted for them throughout the two seasons.
The plot-lines were also really well-done and kept me guessing a lot of the times. Nicely done!
The witchcraft bits, I feel, could have been better depicted or written- the show made it a tad too campy...but that's all right, really.
Highly recommended
You Should Meet My Son! (2010)
A Lovely Piece of Work!
Set in Southern USA, this movie deals with a conservative mother's reaction to finding out her son is gay: she sets out to find him a husband!
I read about this movie at afterelton.com, and it looked promising. Boy, oh, boy, does this movie deliver the goods! While it's true that it shows that the movie was shot on a shoestring budget, you honestly don't even think of it as any big impediment at all. In fact, it adds to the "earthy" feel of the entire movie.
I did read that the accents were really supposed to be fake; but being from India, and never having been to the States, this isn't something that I could pick up on: I leave it to Americans to rate that particular aspect.
I would have to say that the strongest aspect of the film would be the wonderfully quirky characters:
Mae and Rose really shine in this film; hell, you could say it's THEIR movie.
All in all, it's a light hearted movie which doesn't fall into the trap of taking itself too seriously.
I totally recommend this one!
