The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Corporate Fan Fiction
I expected either something in the vein of the books, or loosely ressembling the movies... I feel like naming this the lord of the rings is disingenuous. It's more like loosely based fan fiction, but by a corporation instead of by fans. Even the storylines related to the characters from the actual books are modified in a way that doesn't make any sense.
This looks like something that went through so many corporate reviews that it has no soul. May as well be Disney. If I want to watch a P&A announcement in my spare time I'll do that, no need to sneak them in my entertainment.
Anyways, they bombed this one, better luck next time. It's a good thing they remind me of this show everytime I open my Amazon app, so I remembered to make this review.
Metro Manila (2013)
a shocking first impression of an unfamiliar city
This film is without doubt a thriller, although the action scenes are kept to a minimum in terms of length (they do remain quite violent).
But what's shocking about it is that it's for most people the first time they're actually going to see or hear about Manila, and in this case they'll be seeing it from the bottom looking up. This film paints a rather dark picture, but a picture worth seeing: the developing world isn't a bed of roses, and things like violence and corruption do make up the everyday lives of its poorer inhabitants.
Therefore, this story is a story of struggle, and is definitively worth seeing, if only to get away from the postcard image that we may have seen of the Philippines.
