Snow Dogs (2002)
Cozy, pleasant movie.
This movie was one of my favorites as a kid. I really, really loved it. Thought it had this oddly cozy feel to it, the kind of movie you watch on a rainy day you know.
So yeah, for some reason, today I picked it up again to re-watch it. It was still a nice, pleasant enough movie. I know it's not anything extraordinary or amazing. It's not a masterpiece. But I still really like like it (partly because of nostalgia, I guess). Still think it's a sweet, feel good movie.
Some bad jokes adults won't really find funny and the plot is very simple. The surroundings are are beautiful and the acting is just fine too.
I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I did if I hadn't watched it as a child, but I'd still recommend it to kids, especially if they like dogs.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Mind numbing!
It seems that most people either hate or love this movie. I do both.
Yes, it did make me feel numb for the past hours and it IS a powerful movie the first time you watch it.
For me, the true power of this movie lies in the shock value. What I mean by that is that they throw so many awful things in your face time over and over again and it just gets worse and worse and worse. Your brain gets kind of "uhm...oh...wow". It didn't make me think. It made my brain numb.
If you really look deep in to it though, you'll not find much other than the message that "Drugs are bad, just look how awful these people's lives has turned out!". There's not much more to it. The characters don't really have any deep struggles (other than drugs of course), at least not that we see. They are pretty one dimensional.
In the end, I didn't really feel sympathy for them per se, because they didn't really tell me anything other than "wow...oh...this is just awful" and they where just so incredibly pathetic, the whole lot.
On one hand, I hate this movie for making my brain numb and removing my thinking, and by that ignoring that this movie ISN'T that deep. It'll make you it is, but really isn't.
Once again, it's the shock value. This is really thanks to the whole feeling of the movie and the way it's filmed and the lovely soundtrack it has! It's really powerful, but there is not much behind it.
The acting is good.
I give this movie a 5 out of 10, just because it's so impressive how the movie affected me.
The Last Airbender (2010)
A whole lot of nothing.
Okay, so I'm a huge fan of the animated cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender and as soon as I found out that it was going to be adapted into a live action movie, I sensed that it was going to be bad.
I was completely wrong. It was just utterly awful.
It lacked feeling and a nice pace. Even though I've watched the cartoon numerous times, I had to think to understand what was happening. It was confusing, boring and I felt absolutely NOTHING for the characters. Speaking of the characters - they were NOTHING like in A:TLA. Bad, stiff acting that just made me cringe, stupid plot and unnecessary changes.
The last 20 minutes I was literally just sitting and counting down the minutes. I wanted it to stop, right away. Stop the awful butchering of an awesome series, M. Night Shyamalan! If I had not been a fan, I wouldn't have understood anything. Why are they going there? What is an Earth Kingdom? Why are they flying on a giant furry mat with creepy, slimy legs? WHY IS THIS MOVIE SO RIDICULOUSLY BAD?! They spent no time explaining any of the universe, any of the characters, mentioning anything important. And the plot was changed for the worseX1000000 times. Seriously.
Ugh. Sorry for the rant, but as a fan...this is a total disgrace! And I'm not even mentioning the horrible pronunciation (Oong? Soak-ah? Ear-oh?!). Whoops, I think I just did.
The only thing that was okay was, well...the effects were decent.^^ If you're a fan; do NOT watch this movie unless you want to see an amazing series get slaughtered to the ground by a lazy director. And if you're not...please do not watch this and get the wrong impression of the lovely animated series!
Avatar: The Last Airbender series by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko = Awesome.
The Last Airbender Movie by M. Night Shyamalan = Epic fail.
