A gem!
27 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
"Shifting the blame" is a film that moves you. It is predictable, yes, because you know where it will lead most of the time...BUT...you have no idea what the journey's going to be like. This is the point of the film. It isn't about the one thing that happens but about the people that are affected by it and their reactions to it. Simply put, it's a movie about someone's life and the people around that person.

The story is intriguing because we only get a small glimpse into this person's life. We don't get a beginning nor an end, only the in-between. We get to see part of the life of juvenile delinquent Benjamin. The movie begins with the one action he carries out and then it quickly moves on. In prison Benjamin is approached by a social worker, Niklas. Because of his young age he's considered not a lost cause and that there is a chance of him being able to turn his life around. This is what the social worker offers Benjamin - a way of making amends for all of his wrongdoings and to make something of his life.

Benjamin takes the offer because he doesn't want to be in prison. He arrives at the new place and starts off as the same jackass delinquent he was before but he soon finds his place in the community Niklas has created for him and his likes. He's changing his ways and becoming a better and happier person...

Then past makes its presence known and everything is turned upside down for Benjamin. Once more he has to find his footing in the community that was once his safe haven but now only brings him feelings of guilt and regret. This emotional journey of his is one of two parts of the movie.

Benjamin soon realizes that life can't go on without a confession or without him standing up for what is right - no matter the consequences - and that him making amends is his only shot at a new life. Whether he will seek forgiveness or be granted it, you will have to see for yourselves...

The lead role is played by Edin H. It's his first feature film, his first leading role, and he really delivers. Benjamin's feelings are beautifully portrayed by Edin - be it by a small gesture, his way to breathe or by one simple look. You feel his pain as if it was your own.

The second lead is the social worker's wife Eva, a woman who is still suffering from a certain event in her past and who is trying to move on but simply can't. Her emotional journey is the other part of the movie. Their separate journeys are connected to a secret that ties them together against both of their wishes.

The actress playing Eva is amazing as well. Her emotion, her reactions to what is happening right in front of her is almost eerie in a way. But you understand her, you root for her as well, and you wish them both peace of mind and heart.

What I love about the characters is that none of them are plain evil or plain good. They are versatile and very human. They all make mistakes and their actions are colored by their pasts like with any real life person.

It's a beautiful movie with interesting characters and interactions between people. There are some beautiful portrayals. A real gem!

Surprisingly good - although focus was on wrong characters
15 June 2011
I was surprised when I realized I was actually enjoying this movie - the latest installment of the Pirates movies. I am a fan of the first film but found that the following two did not quite add up to the sheer genius that was the first one. So I wasn't sure I would like 'On Stranger Tides' either. Also, I thought I would miss the characters of Will and Elizabeth. I didn't, as it were.

Instead I found I was far more intrigued by some of the new characters. Philip the cleric (played by Sam Claflin), mermaid Syrena (Astrid Berges-Frisbey), Scrum (Stephen Graham) and Ian McShane's Blackbeard were all interesting characters. Ian McShane had the most fleshed out character obviously, being the antagonist of the story. Stephen Graham (Scrum) filled his role of comic relief well. I was however very disappointed that Sam Claflin and Astrid Berges-Frisbey weren't given more screen time.

I found the love story between Philip and Syrena very interesting. Yes, I realize they were there solely to fill up the void of Will and Elizabeth and to add a little romance to the plot for all the pining ladies and teenage girls at home. BUT it worked! (Apparently I too am a sucker for love stories - who'd a thunk?!) Anyway, by the end of the movie I found myself more invested in Philip and Syrena's storyline and fate than any other character in the movie - even Jack Sparrow's!

I wished their characters would have had more impact on the story. I personally could see several directions where they could have taken the character of Philip; him as a captive, as a missionary and as a ways of redemption for the pirates. It was a pity the Philip/Syrena storyline was so short and ended so abruptly. I sincerely hope they bring back Sam Claflin and Astrid Berges-Frisbey's characters for the fifth installment and give the actors more to do.

Furthermore, the film in itself has everything that makes for a good movie. Action, adventure, good acting (from most), beautiful photography etc. And Johnny Depp was fantastic as Jack Sparrow - as always. You all know why so enough said about him.

Dislikes: Two words. Penélope Cruz. First, woman can't act. Second, most pointless character ever! So what, Angelica's reasons for doing what she did were that simple?! Come on! The writers could've done way better than that. And the suggested sexual tension between Angelica and Jack Sparrow just wasn't there.

To finish off, I really missed some of the old characters. Ragetti and Pintel for example. And Gibbs should've gotten more screen time.

The Young Riders (1989–1992)
My all time favorite TV Show!
10 April 2006
I'm a huge fan of The Young Riders TV series. I used to watch it with my mom when it aired in Sweden in the beginning of the 90s. I remember a summer when the show aired every week day for a couple of weeks. I was very sick during one of these weeks, I had a really high fever, threw up and was aching everywhere. Well, when The Young Riders came on TV I forgot all about that and I was as healthy as anyone jumping up and down in my bed and feeling great (I even made up lyrics to the theme music that I used to sing as the theme played) and I felt fantastic until the end of the episodes when my throat was killing me and my fever was high as ever. Such good times! :)

Season 1 of the series has finally been released on DVD! To those of you who never watched the show when it aired, I ask you to check it out now. The show's got everything...action, romance, adventure, pretty boys, humor, gun fights, a great theme song, pretty girls etc. It's also a great opportunity to watch the young Josh Brolin and Stephen Baldwin in action. You'll love it, I promise.

PS. Guest stars of season one include Cynthia Nixon (of Sex and the City), Rob Estes, Chris Penn (R.I.P), Fisher Stevens etc.

And in an episode of season two Pernell Roberts (Adam Cartwright of 'Bonanza') guest stars. I personally can't wait to see that episode.

Buy it, then Watch and Enjoy folks!
