The Cure: Trilogy (2003 Video)
9/10
Taking the time to write a small review that others might read.
27 November 2005
I saw that there weren't any reviews when I looked the title up myself. I don't know what I was looking for.

I am making reference to a twin DVD set as this is the only way I've seen this. More of a case of, I've heard this, rather than seen. The visuals are good though. The transfer to video motion is smooth and very film-like especially in the close-ups where every bead of sweat glistens in the stage lighting.

The light show is essential to the performance and is well integrated and especially notable in Siamese Twins, the fourth track on disc 1, where bassist Simon Gallup careens about the stage stalking through the fog and intense spotlights that have an eerie yellow tinge, reminiscent of a scene from Apocalypse Now with that bass of his looking more like a menacing machine gun than a musical instrument.

As for the audio on this set I ended up listening to it in Dolby 3 Stereo after trying out the first few songs in 2CH PCM as was provided. Dolby 5.1 Surround is there and although well recorded it lacks the presence of the native PCM track which is in stereo. I measured the sound pressure levels while switching from 5.1 to 2.0 and although the meter showed the loudness to be the same the difference was immediately obvious as the performers seemed to have taken a half a step back from their microphones and turned their guitars up a bit. To get the "in your face" sound and volume this was meant to be heard at you'll need the rawness and brutality of the stereo track without the fancy frills from the mixing panel that seem to have been introduced into the 5.1 track. If your AV Unit can do it, try up mixing the 2CH into 5 Channel Stereo and that should send some good news down to your subwoofer as well. Well it did on mine. I'm not a Hi-Fi reviewer or anything so I can't actually say anything like that, officially so to speak. All I can do is tell you what happened to me.

Right from the start you know this concert is going to be good. Every note that Robert Smith extracts from that tortured guitar of his can be heard as clear as. This is particularly noticeable with his signature endings where he plays around with those squeaky notes of his that aren't quite there. His fingering and mucking about with the notes looking for some right ones come through crystal clear in this recording. Maybe Germany and it's recording prowess has got something to do with it. Back when vinyl ruled Deutsche Grammophon was THE name to get.

I can't give this 10 out of 10 because although the script, screenplay, set design, costumes, direction and performances were all first rate I think the plot was a little weak so it will have to be 9.

Notes:1st viewing good fodder. DVD worth the $10.00
28 June 2004
This is an entertaining combination of "real life drama" and a superb comic book detective story woven together by the fervent imagination of a man suffering acute pain from his terminal cancer. Turning his mind to these thoughts takes him away from personal pain and transmits it to the character in his fabulously standard format PI Show. Made up from the real events in his own life inserting the actual people who surround him in real life into the roles of the characters in his make-believe life that he escapes to. This world of fantasy is black and white. A dying man seeing absolutes.

As for the movie itself I thought some acting could have been better in the real world parts as opposed to the make-believe world which was meant to be cheesy. But it wasn't bad enough to spoil a good entertaining show that you wouldn't be worried about putting on to watch with your gran and I can't recall any swearing either. So there probably wasn't a lot. Must watch it again one day soon.

Wit (2001 TV Movie)
9/10
Watched 224 movies this year.......9/10 for me.
6 December 2003
Like another who commented, I forgot at times that I was watching a movie. The acting just doesn't get noticed and you feel you are watching a real live tape someone is making of their last eight months of life.

I first mistook the title for Wilt and for a brief moment thought this was going to be a re-release and of course it is not but there is a similarity with the two leads playing the parts of Professors of English and their corrections of the words used by their respective interviewers; one being the doctor telling his patient that the disease that has entered her body has a personality, and that it is crafty and treacherous and is proceeding secretly and subtly in the execution of her demise, by his use of the word insidious; the other being a detective who uses the word imply when he really needs to use infer instead and this too is pointed out by that professor. Both concentrating on the abstract while the real maelstrom of what has just hit them is raging in their heads. One, impending death, the other, doom.

I've watched and reviewed 224 movies since the 12th of December last year and this along with Rain (2001/111)(NZ) were the only ones to rate 9/10 for me. Queen Margot and Snow Falling on Cedars got a nine one year and Pulp Fiction did in it's day too but this is a rare gem of a movie and I'm really glad to have seen it.

Forget about the movie....Watch the story!
7 July 2003
If you forget about "authenticity" and whether or not the bullet left the body at the right angle or that no-one can shoot straight because they've forgotten their training and just panicked and started shooting wildly or that someone needed longer arms than are humanly possible or whatever and just had a look at the story, you'll find a good movie.

You see how easily and innocently unsuspecting straight cop gets pulled into web of bad cops and how well it sticks. You see futility and desperation as he tries to escape and his final resolve. You also see some pretty bizarre acting by D. Hopper as he seems to be playing it for a black comedy.

As far as movies go this does rate higher than a home-made video but not much farther along the path to Hollywood BlockBuster than say a very amateurish B grade show. Because this was based on actual events the story is the movie and it's interesting to see how it all took place or at least how easy it is for this corruption to be going on.

Going back in time or just to New Zealand?
24 June 2003
Explicitly gritty homelife in the Maori culture makes some of us glad that we have what we have and not what they've got.

The way the Maori women depicted in this film accept their lot in life seems incredible and backward by today's standards and this film IS TODAY! (merely 9 years ago)

The scene with the mother finding her thirteen year old daughter was so believable I had to hit the pause button and take a break and blow my nose.

Having seen it twice before on tape and now I have the DVD, if I'm not mistaken the fight scene in the pub when the jukebox problem is resolved, seems speeded up and a little jerky and somehow rather considerably more unrealistic than the tape version. That is either true or I'm just imagining it and my memory of older events is flawed.

Anyway this movie stands out as something special and it's a shame its sequel didn't quite live up to it. I have noticed that once or twice before with sequels. "Aliens" would be one exception in my book.

The Jackal (1997)
7/10
Knocking it a little albeit harmlessly.
15 June 2003
Bruce makes a pretty good Jackal in this and Gere has to bring him down. As to why the Jackal needs a small anti aircraft cannon to shoot his human target is beyond me but it makes for some interesting footage. I love the final scene where Gere manages to squeeze off about six or so rounds without actually getting a finger on the trigger. Great energetic film with tension and suspense. A play about, "What makes us tick?"
15 June 2003
This is a well directed play set in a warehouse. It shows us human nature portrayals of the characters responsible for a jewellery heist in its bloody aftermath. Later on we learn how each got there, their rendezvous point and as human nature has its way again, the end result of that final meeting. During all this an alarming side of us is exposed in the torture scenes. After three viewings 8/10

How did that nut behind the wheel get loose?
5 June 2003
A little mysterious,... hotted up '57 Cadillac chasing the Saab in the snow, at night, after a pub brawl....hmm.

The greater part of this movie takes place within the Saab or looking at it from without. Most of this is very good stunt work and captivating to watch.

Charlie the cop was a crackup right from the moment he just helped himself to a lift with the boys in the Saab. From the minute he speaks he sounds suspicious and reminds us more than once that he is off duty and just wants to get home.

The two brothers' dialogue doesn't sound like any two brothers communicating that I've heard but maybe they're step-brothers or something. The punch-ups are magnificent and some of the recipients are mega tough. Its either that or lightweights doing the punching. When you watch a man standing over another and punching him in the face repeatedly, say maybe five or six slammers, and then the guy can get up and carry on, blood lip, nose, eye perhaps? nothing!! Not a mark. Those gridiron guys at Yale, they're something else and hey, can they drive or what?

The flaws in this movie don't get in the way and it was intriguing to watch.

Capricorn One (1977)

A bogus trip to Mars goes wrong with dire consequences.
3 June 2003
Remember, this was made in 1978 and things were different then.

Still in space race mode, NASA wants to put men on Mars so much so that they are prepared to fake it when a major flaw in construction is discovered, just so they can keep their future funding intact. For a while the ploy almost seems feasible until disaster disrupts the plan and that's when things start to get really nasty.

Ignore all the technical/scientific errors; forget the holes in the plot and just enjoy a ripping good yarn with a very memorable performance by Gould as the intrepid reporter.

There's very little Sci-Fi or sf (as some prefer) in this movie as today it is mostly fact and the rest of it is just error now so don't be put off if you're not a science fiction fan.

My rating 6/10 (Good)

Enigma (2001)

Everything you'd want in a crack the secret code movie plus a bit you might not have thought of.
29 May 2003
Cleverly made and backed by a novel, we see a tale of mystery, romance, espionage, action (fascinating car chase sequence) and of course several explosions (that didn't quite reach the sub woofer travelling all the way from the North Atlantic Tub). Done on a shoestring budget (and one would expect no less with "Superaccountant Man" as producer) the movie doesn't need any more but delivers a most entertaining blend of truth and fiction with a rather almost conceivable plot which was probably true anyway, truth being the way it is.

Here's a plot. You have to crack a code that took you ten months last time only this time the probability factor has moved from a few million to one, to a few billion to one and oh by the way, you've got four days this time otherwise we lose a convoy of around 140 ships. Slot in a budding romance a missing glamour spy a little mental disorder and a super smooth MI5 type operative's subversive tactics and you've got yourself a winner. This probably didn't match some other box office sales records but I guess that's because you actually have to watch this one to understand it.

High Fidelity (2000)

High Fidelity in real life or just the music?
19 May 2003
A movie that quickly gets started and delivers the male view of the affairs of the heart as seen by Rob, the thirty-something year old record store owner. Rob's cohorts are superb and a necessary part of the show. Rob seems to have more respect for his recordings than his women.

I rate this 8/10

Winona Ryder is the "patient" and Whoopi Goldberg is the asylum nurse. A good story is told of a young woman (Ryder) who doesn't seem to fit into normalcy and quickly moves to a mental institution to get cured. In there she discovers friendship and compares her situation with those of the other inmates.

A well paced movie with good acting by all, based on truth and gives you something to think about when contemplating mental health.

Terror in the air that rates a look-see.
18 May 2003
Action packed story of a group of commandos that board a 747 mid flight and attempt to overcome the terrorists who've taken control. Kurt Russell, the non-military interloper, has to take charge of the situation in Steven Segal's absence. Good entertainment and faults aside, well worth a look. Rating 6/10
