Basically, the movie "The Blair Witch Project" has made found footage the best genre in horror.
So J.J. Abrams came up with the idea of making a monster movie about a monster attacking New York with a shaky camera.
So, let's begin.
Robert Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David) is a guy who is hosting a Good-Bye Party on a trip to Japan. His brother (Mike Vogel) Jason and best friend Hud (T.J. Miller) decide to record the party, taping testimonials from people, and so on.
However, all goes bad when the power goes out in the city, with people watching the news about an oil explosion. They all go out to see what is happening until they see a fireball destroying buildings, forcing them to flee.
They soon discover that a creature is attacking the city and must find a way out of New York, dealing with dangerous risks on the way.
I liked how J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves came up with the idea of having their own monster attack New York with the shaky camera, even though there were some flaws in the movie.
The performances were great, displaying fear and showing other types of behavior, such as trying to be heroic and even depression after some of the characters are killed off.
The script was great, not only with the dialogue and just action, but also with the suspense they put in the movie.
The only flaw in the film was the running time. Though 84 minutes or less are enough to watch the movie, I wanted it to be longer to see more of the attacks, monsters, and the ending.
Basically, one of the best monster films I've ever seen and I really hope they make a sequel.
Rating = 9/10, 3.5/5
