Kurier (2019)
surprisingly good
Other reviews of this film have been pretty negative but I was surprised how good it was. In the vain of "Max Manus" and "The Black Book" two great war films about the resistance "The Resistance Fighter" is actually about a Polish soldier sent back to Poland from England to deliver messages to the Polish Home Army. The germans are slowly retreating from Poland while the russians are advancing on Poland from the east. I really liked the main character Lt. Jan Nowak-Jezioranski who is the courier sent back to Poland while trying to evade getting captured or killed by the germans. I thought the dialogue and subtitles were well done in this film and the plot moves swiftly as the Lt. is pursued by a german spy who wishes to make contact with the underground and convince them the invading russians are their real enemy. Lt. Jan is tough and capable and the action scenes are well done here. Their is a sad history lesson at the end of this film that some reviewers have said shouldn't be discussed anymore but I disagree. I had low expectations of this film going in but was very pleasantly surprised and glad I purchased it on Amazon.
Sekretnoe oruzhie (2019)
great trailer, awful movie
So "Secret Weapon" is a new Soviet war fim about a group of soldiers sent behind the german lines to destroy a secret weapon now in possession of the germans (the weapon is the katusha rocket launcher). The trailer for this movie is great--the film is a waste of time to watch. With no backstory a russian solder is taken from jail and put in command of a group sent to get the secret weapon back or desttroy it. The dialogue, dubbing and plot of the movie quickly unravel and start not making sense. Their are battle scenes where the germans fall down dead if the russians merely take the safety catch off their rifles and lots of slow scenes where the soldiers talk about home and their families. A similar but actually quite good russian film from 2002 called "The Star" covers the same ground as Secret Weapon but does it way better than this film. My favorite scene in Secret Weapon which took it from bad to ridiculous was when one soldier orders another to collect firewood and the 2nd soldier's response is "your way too bold dude"--no I'm not kidding. I don't think "dude" was part of the russian vocabulary in 1943 but I could be wrong.
Max Manus (2008)
One of the greatest war movies you've probably never seen
Flat out fantastic film, this is the true story of Norwegian resistance leader Max Manus who terrorized the Nazi's during the occupation of his Country. Max is a total badass who is crazy angry the Germans have invaded Norway and he and his friends perform numerous acts of sabbotage while avoiding capture over the course of the film. This is a fast paced, edge of your seat film filled with gun battles and bombings all brilliantly staged. The film is also deeply sad as the Germans torture and execute hundreds of people in retaliation for Max actions. By the time the War ends Max is a total wreck as he describes himself to the woman he loves, "I've got no money, no job, no education and my nerves are shot, what do I have to celebrate". But what Max has is the admiration of his King and Country for being a true hero and as the end credits reveal Max life completely turns around after the War and he finds happiness and purpose. Seek out this film on Prime and watch it, you will be blown away.
World on Fire (2019)
Did Hallmark Channel make this?
PBS/Masterpiece Theater-- what happened here? This WWII miniseries is among the worst things I've ever seen and from folks noted for such great television. Many other reviewers have brought up what they didn't like about the series, and now having sat thru it, I agree with them. It brings modern day "political correctness" and awareness to a time it didn't apply. All the Men in this series are SO sensitive I found it ridiculous. From the gay couple, to the guy who loves two women, and the worst-- a german soldier crying because he's fighting for the mean old Nazi's, it just all seemed so "manipulated" wanting the audience to have sensitivty to everyone's feelings. I was hoping for something closer to the fantastic "Generation War" series but this was just...."sappy". And to end (?) the series like it did, with indications there will be a second series, maybe, in a year or two, what a waste of time.
Dag II (2016)
Turkish Special Forces kick butt!
As an American with no knowledge of Turkish SF I wasn't sure what to expect of this 'war movie' but it was a very pleasant surprise. Turkish soldiers go into Iraq to rescue a journalist. If this 'plot' sounds familiar its because it is; very similar films have been made before Bravo Two Zero with the SAS, and Tears of the Sun with the US Navy Seals. This movie had great battle scenes, heroic soldiers, heroic women, it rivaled any Hollywood film I've seen on the subject--very well done.
Cardinal (2017)
Canadian "Nordic Noir"
I found "Cardinal" streaming on Hulu and started watching it because I've been a fan of Billy Campbell's ever since he did "The Rocketeer". And what you get here in addition to "Billy" is a crackling good, crime-detective serial killer drama that was WAY better than I expected. It is graphic, and gruesome but don't let that deter you from watching the first season of 6 episodes. I liked the "subplots" involving the family life of both Detectives on the case in addition to the crime story. Billy Campbell is not really a "tough guy" here. He's more of a "beaten down by the world, loads of troubles, tortured soul" kind of guy but he's relentless & brilliant as an investigator. The pairing of these two characters reminded me of the superb Danish crime series "The Bridge". If you enjoy Nordic Noir, crime shows--you will like this series.
