Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
A good movie that sells a narrative we now know was a complete lie. Propaganda.
I put 1 star because of the context in which this was made. It's selling a macho pro-USA false narrative.
This movie made the world less informed about the truth of the torture that the US conducted, and it will be listed in history books as propaganda.
The Real Right Stuff (2020)
There are so many good documentaries out there. This ain't it.
I recommend The Right Stuff, and In the Shadow Of the Moon. But I've seen just about all that exist.
This documentary is pointless. It manages to tell this exciting story in a boring way. And explains things poorly. I had to pause at several points to explain to my girlfriend the context, because it was just so poorly done and missing the interesting bits.
I could probably go up on stage and improv a better telling of this story.
No, choose another documentary.
I'd give it a 3, but changing it to a 2 because it's so blatantly unnecessary when the story has already been told much better, e.g. in The Right Stuff.
Train Set (2018)
Not watchable.
If this were done by a high schooler I'd say not too bad, but would not recommend to anyone but their proud mother.
Do Women Have a Higher Sex Drive? (2018)
So unprofessionally made. A new low.
This must be the least professionally made documentary I've ever seen. Let's start with the acting in the reaction shots of the interviewer. Her "oh, really?" reactions are worse than Mark Wahlberg's famous "What? No!" from "The Happening".
And her voice-overs even when it's not part of an interview. They are so incredibly distractingly bad, with inappropriate pauses in the middle of sentences. Really? That's the best take? Really? You could not just re-record that voiceover?
And in every interview she's wearing a completely different outfit. No, hear me out. She has such a different clothing, jewellery, hair, and make-up that it's distracting because it makes you wonder "who is... is that the same interviewer?" when you should be thinking of the contents of the interview.
There's so much more to say about this documentary. For some magic reason it goes on a detour to talk about The Pill, for no reason that's relevant what-so-ever.
But this is just scratching the surface of what nonsense is in this thing. Logical conclusions are not followed. E.g. the argument women have more sex drive, they're just more picky. That's one completely contradictory sentence, since as sex drive goes up by definition pickiness would be pushed to the side.
But really the proof that this is the worst documentary ever made is when the interviewer actively makes her interviewee uncomfortable AND they chose to leave that in. Why would you do that to yourself? Why would you make them visibly uncomfortable? When you edit this movie WHY WHY WHY would you leave that in?!
Oh, also she pronounces "women" as "woman" half the movie.
This is the "The Room" of documentaries.
The Square (2017)
Let's talk about the music
That music is so bad. I understand the point of that music, but it's so bad that during the scenes with music I can't concentrate on what's happening, just waiting for the scene to end so that the music ends.
Again, I get it. It's meant to be terrible. But it's too terrible.
Other than that, the movie suffers from being way too long, with scenes that easily could have been vastly cut down, without losing the point. And many scenes are clearly in the movie because the director wanted a particular shot.
Battlefield Earth (2000)
Not "good", but absolutely does not deserve the bad rep
It's a "meh" movie. Predictable story, "meh" acting, and a few big plot holes.
But so what? I'd say the same about most Hollywood movies. They pretty much all have plot holes of this size. If you want to see plot holes you should have a look at Sucker Punch (2011). I spent most of *that* movie wanting to scream at the screen.
Battlefield Earth I could at least create a suspension of disbelief with, and be entertained for a bit.
Battlefield Earth is entertaining "meh". The worst 100 movies of all time are so bad that you can't even follow the story, or understand the characters motivations (Aliens vs Avatars, Plan 9 from outer space, Sucker Punch (ok, so the story there is understandable, but stupid)).
If you think this movie belongs on bottom 100 then you haven't seen many movies. If you ignore that it's based on Scientology (or whatever) then it's just another Hollywood meh.
Sucker Punch (2011)
Stupidest movie I've ever seen
This is the stupidest movie I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of movies. It's not the worst movie I've ever seen, but probably the second worst. It is though, by far, the stupidest.
Everything about it is just terrible. Well, actually the intro had potential, but then it just became a horrible mess of plot holes and bad directing.
I mean I didn't expect much from the trailer or the poster, but it was way worse than I could ever dream of.
I kept wanting to shout "Why are you doing that?! That serves no purpose! It doesn't help you achieve your goals!". Examples:
Why didn't they do anything when the cook killed Rocket? The music comes back on and she.... continues dancing? NOBODY'S LOOKING AT YOU! YOUR FRIEND NEEDS HELP RIGHT THE FOOD NOW!
Train going to city, has bomb on, will explode. Uh... so blow up the track! Get *on* the train, what are you KIDDING ME?
Airplane going round and round when there's a dragon down there. Yeah, that's clever.
So you're sent to a mental institution. You make up a dream world to escape from your situation. You make up a dream world WHERE YOU ARE AN ABUSED PROSTITUTE. That's like sitting in a boring meeting daydreaming about being in ANOTHER BORING MEETING.
And the directing is equally horrible. When I loudly complained about this afterwards someone pointed out that the writer and director are the same person. Makes sense.
He's also guilty of extreme overuse of "filming into a mirror, zoom in, the mirror is now the 3D scene" and similar suspension-of-disbelief- killing methods.
No sex or boobs to make up for it either. There was only the hint of a hint of a euphemism for sex. And the PG rating prevented any blood worth mentioning. Fighting scenes - terrible. The less said about them the better.
And "your will be unprepared"... but... you just prepared me. It's like "prepare to be surprised".
Parting words: (something like) "Go out and fight!". What are you, 12? Why? I guess if the people in the movie performed actions completely unrelated to their goals I guess we in real life should too?
By the way, yes I did see all the hints about deeper meaning and who's real and who's not, but it was all just half-hearted that you'd think the director/writer just threw a bunch of stuff up there to see what would stick (or possibly did it by accident). Nothing did.
The only thing that makes sense about this movie is that it premiered on April 1.
