I shut it off after 30 minutes...
General Electric Theater: The Dark, Dark Hours (1954)
Hints of Dean's greatness!
James Dean has always been one of my favorite actors! East of Eden is an amazing and powerful film and a lot of it is due to Dean's presence!
Traces of this can be seen in this teleplay. Aired in 1954 this episode is even more notable in that Dean acts with Ronald Reagan which in itself is remarkable! Reagan is actually quite good in this episode as a doctor being terrorized by Dean and his companion played by jack Simmons. Without giving away much of the plot the interplay between the principals is quite good and seeing Constance Ford in this episode is also very cool!
Dean is a consummate actor. For someone so young his range was incredible and he is so convincing in this teleplay. Although the quality of this black and white episode is grainy and the audio is less than stellar you can see flashes of the brilliance of Dean for sure!
Reagan is surprising in his range in this teleplay as well! Having only seen Reagan in a couple of B comedies I was quite impressed with his acting in this teleplay.
Bonanza: The Storm (1962)
The original "Love Story!"
Bonanza has always been my favorite show ever! The stories and classic episodes make this show unequaled! What a joy that these episodes are available to view on You Tube. Without giving away the plot I just wanted to say that the chemistry between Michael Landon and Brooke Hayward is electric! It's refreshing to see shows like this where the whole gamut of emotion is depicted in a way that challenges the intelligence of the viewer...The acting was superb and in my opinion superior to anything that Hollywood releases today!
Actors of today can learn from the value of a show like Bonanza.
Brooke Hayward had an innocence and beauty about her that made her so appealing! And the charisma of Michael Landon is unequaled. Michael's legacy is so powerful. We need more actors of the caliber of Michael Landon in Hollywood.
The show is pure romance! The beauty of the two young actors is so appealing! You actually feel like they were in love...perhaps they were. Brooke Hayward is the daughter of Margaret Sullavan and Leland Hayward. Margaret Sullavan was known for her role in "The Little Shop Around the Corner"...the classic with Jimmy Stewart! I can see the essence of Brooke's mother in her acting..
The love scenes between Michael and Brooke are electric! This is how a romance should be shown...the only contemporary actress I would say that comes close in appeal is perhaps Sandra Bullock...like in films like Hope Floats and The Lake House. But this particular Bonanza episodes outshines them all! I've seen this one a few times and it moves me every time!
Thank you Brooke and Michael for an inspired performance. And also Lorne, Pernell and Dan for your contributions to this marvelous show....
The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Annabel (1962)
Suspenseful & well acted!
Wow...I just finished watching this episode on Hulu and was riveted to the screen mainly by Dean Stockwell's performance as a psychotic young man enamored with a young woman, Annabel..played by the lovely Susan Oliver. Apparently "David" (Dean's character) had a relationship with Annabel that ended a year ago according to her..yet David continues to have an obsessive love for her even after she married. We learn that David has a roommate in the city but ventures out to his late parent's lovely country estate every weekend where he has pictures of Annabel throughout his house. He is so obsessed by her that he badgers her with phone calls and eventually pays her a visit which was really creepy and set the tone of the rest of the play. Dean Stockwell's fresh faced performance of this psychotic young man is a classic! Seeing him so young in this performance is astounding in that I have seen him in many shows in his later years. He reminded me a bit of "James Dean" not only in appearance but in his brooding mood in this play.
A very well done episode of Hitchcock's hourly programs..I would consider this one of the best I've seen but I'm making my way through the different seasons on Hulu. I remember watching these shows many, many years ago and it's nice seeing these classic plays reemerging on great sites like Hulu! Check it out! It's riveting.
Bonanza: Invention of a Gunfighter (1964)
Great theatre!
Wow...I remember watching this episode many years ago. This is probably one of my favorite Bonanza episodes. It is like a Greek tragedy and the moral of the story is no matter how proud or good you think you are...being a bounty hunter for the wrong reasons can lead to a lesson in humility..which "Little Joe" doled out very effectively. Great drama! Great acting on the part of Guy Stockwell and a bonafide classic in my opinion.
Watching "Johnny" change from a meek, bullied friend of Joe's to a cocky, arrogant nemesis was quite dramatic & the ending was perfect theatre! Highly recommended!
