Siren (2016)
Not a bad movie, and def enjoyable if u like the first VHS..Ending spoiler at very end of review.
I like this flick, I thought it expanded on the short segment from VHS (Amateur night) which had pretty much the same basic premise only much more fleshed out here.. I appreciate that they used the same actress, and her actual signing voice in places where she sang, Hannah def IS this part, and plays it well, and it would be sad to see someone else in the role. All other charaters due well enough in their roles, tho besides Hannah, Justin Welborn as Mr. Nyx really stands out in his part, but he is also a great indie horror actor. Anyway, a decent movie for sure.
****So my lol "big" spoiler on this, is that I think the ending would have been a ton better if the main character, his wife, and the siren had all decided on a polyamorous relationship lmao. It would have been really fitting here, and would have been a nice resolution to the mythos and rules set forth by the movie itself.****
Happy Death Day (2017)
A very good mainstream horror.
By the end of this movie, if you don't love the main character I dunno what's wrong with you lol. Just a great movie.. Don't think it's any type of spoiler to say that the whole 'horror does Groundhog Day' thing works here in spades.. I loved Carter, the dude she barely knows who she wakes up next to every day. I would say this is slightly more of a comedy than a horror but the slasher scenes do deliver. This is probably the most fun I've had in a horror movie since watching "Cabin in the woods." Which though they have totally different premises, the spark of creativity and spunk where present in both. As others have mentioned, I just don't feel like the trailers really serve this movie justice, but then again I suppose they didn't wanna give away too much. If you like comedy horrors, that are not super gory (in this case it works! jus sayin..) then you should definitely check this out.. The plot moves along quick, and there's some good twists along the way. Also this movie gives credit where its due, love it!
The Houses October Built 2 (2017)
May contain slight spoilers..
I really dug "The houses October Built." I can get down with the ff conceit, and it was especially well done there. The whole idea was original, people going to haunted houses and looking for more extreme haunts and biting off more than they can chew.. But this movie pretty much undoes all the magic of the first.. Sorry but I don't think it's really any spoiler to say that every single cast member from the first is in the sequel, and while the given reason makes sense, and also it was kinda neat (for about 5 seconds) to watch the whole gang reunited, there was really no new ground tread here to warrant undoing the ending of the original to make this sequel..
Sure there were a few creepy parts but those mostly stem from the appearances of familiar faces from the first film. It just didn't have the same feeling or energy as the first.. Yet they were doing almost the same thing again.. Lastly I just felt that the big "twist" wasn't worth doing to the overall story line but I won't ruin it for those who do want to watch. I guess it was worth watching, I didn't absolutely hate it.. But I won't be re-watching, where adversely I have re-watched the first THOB a few times.. Sorry guys.. This cow's been milked dry, onto new ideas.
Residue (2017)
Not for everyone.. But pretty decent for me!
The most immediate flick I can relate this to is the film John dies at the end. Lol maybe mixed in with a bit of Naked Lunch & The Hive (a great indie horror I strongly suggest u check out if u haven't seen it.) What to say, what to say... It's hard to talk too much about this flick without giving stuff away, but I will say pay attention to the beginning... Even though it may not make sense then, I actually went back and re-watched it after viewing the whole film. Another reviewer commented that the climax doesn't really leave room to breathe.. well watching the beginning again gave me a lil more sense of closure. I can give u a little rundown (hopefully) without giving too much away.. A trashy PI is given the opportunity to make some real money by delivering a package.. That package ends up being a journal that has very unusual effects on the reader.. As "the book" is discussed right off the bat in the movie I don't feel like its a major spoiler talking about it. The whole concept was cool, but I wish they'd had a bigger budget and been able to delve further into the journal..
The lead actor playing the PI is the reason I can't give this a higher rating.. His acting is pretty decent in some spots and not so great in others.. I liked the daughter tho, and the gf/hotel owner, and of course Lammont and Fairweather. This is the kinda movie that after the first 20 mins or so you're like ehhh, but if u can stick with it, it delivers in a weird sense. If ur into bizarre indie horror, you'll prb be down with this.
It Stains the Sands Red (2016)
Very decent indie horror flick
***Spoilers sprinkled throughout*** Now I may have given this a bit higher score just to balance out some of the ppl that obv haven't even seen the whole movie, but for me I'd prb give it a true 7 outta 10.. It resonates with me on a personal level, and I'd be being a bit dishonest if I didn't reveal this bias...I don't need to share with you exactly why, but suffice to say I have ongoing experience with having almost 100% custody of a sibling's child.
Moving on tho, I also watch a TON of indie horror, and immediately recognized the lead from the Vicious Bros "Extraterrestrial," which not ashamed to say is another movie I thoroughly enjoyed! It has its flaws, as does this flick, tho these movies are about as far apart as can be tone-wise. This movie is pretty slow moving, but I loved that. It gave the lead time to really endear herself as a character, despite her hooker/druggie/child abandoning status.. But that was the whole point of this movie, redemption.. And it hit home well IMHO. The protagonist's talk with Smalls was great.. Not all actresses can pull off that much monologue throughout a movie and carry it well but she did. This is deff a drama first, and horror or really thriller second. There's one scene where Smalls intervenes, and tho the scene may have been obvious in set-up, it still really worked.. for me anyway.. Worth a watch if you enjoy a lil comedy in your horror and a slow paced but awesome flick.
