Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (2015)
Great game. Lots of fun
I had a lot of fun playing it. Leveling up my character and weapons and perfecting my build (I went with hex and melee). So many great weapons that you can infuse. So many spells, hexes, staffs, pyromancy, etc. There's so much variety to how you want to approach the combat here.
The story wasn't very clear or interesting tbh, but the overall atmosphere and gameplay kept me hooked. And overall, the game wasn't all that hard. I hardly encountered any moments where I was like "wtf thats bs!".
The map and world design is were great for the most part. With some beautiful imagery throughout the game.
The bosses were okay. Probably some of the weakest ones in the whole series. But there were some really good ones (Pursuer, Fume Knight, Sir Alonne)
I guess my biggest criticism is about the story or what brings everything together, everything just seems kind of scattered. You're not really solving a puzzle here, but you can still enjoy all the individual pieces.
When I was done with, I felt a bit sad having to turn it off the last time.
Would definitely recommend it to Soulsborne fans.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Victory and Death (2020)
Incredible sights and sounds
The last four episodes were absolutely incredible. What really caught me by surprise was the level of the sound design. The sound and music were reminiscent of Blade Runner. In fact, the entire production is movie level quality. Seriously, these four episodes were produced better than a lot of big budget animated films.
Incredible work by Filloni and crew. The story was great and led up to a great finale for the entire series. Obviously it was all going to lead up to order 66, and they pulled it off in such a great and tragic way. Emphasizing the relationship between Ashoka and clones only to have them turn on her. And that last scene with Vader was so haunting.
10/10.
Succession: With Open Eyes (2023)
Not enough closure.
It was a good episode, but it didn't really work a series finale for me. Seemed more like a season finale. The whole president election thing didn't have any real closure. Ken's character didn't have any real closure either, in the sense that he is still dealing with trying to escape his father's shadow.
Also that whole scene with shiv changing her mind last minute just seemed very contrived and convenient to use her as a "bad guy" and subvert expectations.
I get that it's supposed to be a sort of satire, but it still ended on a bit of a whimper, and the dominoes didn't fall perfectly.
TLDR: decent ending, but seemed more like a season finale, than a series finale.
The Last of Us (2023)
It was okay
Some very good moments throughout the series.
It started off great. The first and second episode were great.
The rest of the series was okay, but the pacing was ridiculously bad. I get that it's mostly focused on the dramatic side of the game, but the very small amount of scenes with infected and cutting out too many scenes like with Bill and David really messed up the pacing. It always seemed like something was missing and the story was moving too fast.
Which led to another big issue: The main duo didn't have a lot of chemistry, they didn't seem to really enjoy each other's company or trust each other. Not until the last episode when Joel finally starts to open up and come out his shell for about 10 minutes before things went south. But by then it was just too late. The show should have either spent more time on Joel and Ellie instead of other minor characters like Kathleen and David, or made the series longer.
It didn't have to be The Walking Dead (don't really care too much for that show) but not having enough infected took out a lot of the suspense horror that made the game what it was. It was that incredible balance of dramatic story and horror. And without enough infected, it left the world feeling bleak and empty. And the show didn't do enough to compensate.
The dialogue was overall decent, but a bit corny at times and the delivery of the lines seemed stiff. Kathleen's character was lame and her voice was annoying. It was hard to believe she'd be a leader. Even tess or Marlene seemed like better leaders. And Davids character was almost cheesy anime villain with his generic monologues.
The finale was underwhelming. The shortest episode do the series and completely rushed. And I thought the Joel hospital sequence was a let down, mostly because of the music and editing.
Overall it was okay. I would have given it an 8. But, come on. They had a blueprint that was already perfect (THE GAME). It easily could have been a lot better. I was so hyped for this show and was left pretty frustrated and disappointed. Which is why I'll give 7.
The Last of Us: Look for the Light (2023)
Decent ending, could have been a lot better
Pros:the dialogue between J&E here was better and more fluid than most of the season. Although some of it was overly dramatic.
Their bond seemed stronger. Like they were finally opening up to each other and genuinely liked each other's company. (Wish we would have had this sooner and more of it in the season.)
The giraffe scene was great.
Cons: the episode was way too short. It was the shortest one of the season!
Ellie's immunity being explained made Joel's decision less impactful. Because it implied that there are most likely more like her out there. If it wasn't explained then it would have meant that she really was the only hope for a cure and had to die, so Joel saving her really meant the world would probably never have a cure. But the way they wrote the show made his decision seem more rational.
The hospital sequence was very underwhelming. The technical choices took all the energy from it - the sad music, muddled sounds, montage-like editing. What were the showrunners trying to convey? What Joel was feeling? Then why the sad music? Why skip through it? Joel could skip through it, that's the whole point of living with his decision. My guess is that the showrunners wanted to convey to the audience that what Joel did was tragic and not "good" in the grand scheme, but also they toned down the violence and skipped through it to make his actions easier to stomach and more easy to sympathize with. Like it was a necessary evil. But that just took the moral ambiguity away from the whole thing.
It's like the showrunners don't want to allow open discussions and interpretation from the audience.
Better Call Saul: Fun and Games (2022)
Great episode
That intro sequence was incredible.
The saul and kim scenes were 10/10. Very sad and terrific performances from Bob and rhea
The mike and gus scenes 8/10. There was nothing at stake for them anymore. Their scenes were good but way too long.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger (2022)
Basically a whole universe in one episode
Such a great episode. It had a little bit of everything. Mando + Grogu + Luke + Asohka + force training + the original score + western(Kurosawa) references
10/10.
