The Experiment (2010)
Twisted Director
And the ending and flashes to India prove it! The line comparing men to monkeys is also off. Mankind evolved from apres, if he evolved at all and not monkeys!
An Ordinary Man (2017)
An Ordinary Man - Review
SPOILER: The ending allows for many interpretations. Seems Milo executes Tanja for disobeying orders. It's not clear why the paper says he's been captured while he's still in his apartment with a gun on the table in front of him. Have his protectors decided it's too burdensome given his self destructive behavior or have they cut some sort of a deal in conjunction with the EU Ministers visit. Have they given him the option of taking his life or has he requested this as an alternative to being turned over for trial. Watching more carefully might provide clues to answer these questions...
Colossal (2016)
It's all about bullying
All the facts point to this being about bullying. Take the grade school incident of Oscar stomping on Gloria's school project and crushing it. Even though Oscar tried to present himself as a different person the second time around when rejected for Joel he became abusive, psychologically then physically. The climax is when Gloria, who has gone to Seoul, shows up in the park as the monster, picks up and tosses Oscar, finally overcoming her fear of Oscar, which presumably she has carried for years and is at the root of her alcoholism. Hathaway does a commendable job of making you dislike her character, as Oscar does in getting you to like his character until Gloria spurns him and the tables turn. You end up cheering for her in the end as she overcomes her demons...
Huo zhe (1994)
Touching, informative, simple, but brilliantly done
Many of the comments written so far give an accurate summary of the plot and idnetify the creative simplicity of the director. I would like to second the positive things which have been said and recommend the film to those who would like to get a "feel" for what it must have been like to have gone through some of what the Chinese people who experienced it first hand live through. Watch it and read "Wild Swans" by Jung Chang. Yimou Zhang loves his people and seems to want to serve them in much the same way Lu Xun did in his time. My 'hats' off to him.
