A Bigger Splash (2015)
Swept into this lush life
I was enchanted by the eccentrics in this imaginatively scripted tale of sensuality, lust and lush life of glamorous people. I was impressed at the way all the elements of the movie came together--story, acting, cinematography, location, editing, music-- to create a magically disjointed vision. I've not been much of a Fiennes fan, but his manic energy was electrifying. Dakota Johnson was the perfect "Lolita" type and given her family and talent, she is to the manor born. Tilda Swinton is always like a unicorn, not quite of this world, and spellbinding believable. Their sexy, sensual life made me want to be about 20 years younger. I've binged watched about 11 films in the last couple weeks of the holidays and this one stands out amongst them. Not about or for ordinary people.
Time of Death (2013)
Powerful and life affirming
I just got done watching a marathon viewing of all 6 episodes of Time of Death, a series my friend recommended. I was instantly hooked on this sensitive series about real people at the end of their life, the choices they make about treatment and how to die. It has the effect of lifting the veil of mystery around death--something we aren't very comfortable with in America. There will be a lot of people who won't or can't handle the powerful subject---and there are plenty of tears---but ultimately it was incredibly life affirming. The family that is featured is a beautiful bunch of people that you will root for and remember long after this series is over. Not that I'm wishing for more people to die, but since it is an inevitability, I hope there will be more episodes to come.
Hit and Run (2012)
Young lovers on the run in super cool vintage cars
My husband and I just went to see Hit and Run without knowing much about it. He liked it a lot- -he thought the script and actors were very good--and I loved it. What did I love? The story, while not exceptionally original, had lots of twists, turns and surprises and was woven together in an unexpected way. The romantic couple were super sexy (I think Im in love with Dax now). I dig all the old American muscle cars (not so much the new ones) and liked that there were interracial romances without making it a big deal about it. The dialog was smart and at times even had a Preston Sturgiss type snappy banter thing going on. Tom Arnold was hilarious as the cop who couldn't shoot straight. I laughed out loud throughout the entire movie---how often does THAT happen? Although I wanted to bitch slap the female character for choosing to stay with such a (super sexy) loser, what girl doesn't go through her "bad boy" phase? I was pleasantly surprised and would see it again.
