Deadheads (2011)
Much Better Than Expected
When I heard of this movie, I thought "Great, another attempt at a Zombie Comedy, trying to follow the trail of current pinnacle Shaun of the Dead. I've seen a few of them lately, such as the craptastic "Ahhhhh Zombies". And when I went in to this, tickets bought by someone else, just showing up to have some fun seeing a movie dressed as a zombie, I hoped and hoped that in the very least the movie would be made short... Or maybe even a silent film so I could sleep.
Instead, they just made it GOOD. I'd seen the previews before hand, and I wasn't sold. I heard the summary, and rolled my eyes. I saw the movie, and was laughing harder than I remember laughing at ANY movie lately... And the whole theatre was laughing too! For the budget that was used in this movie, it's leaps and bounds above almost all the latest zombie movies being churned out in mass. It has good laughs, good effects, good acting, the total package. Ever since seeing it at the TC Film Festival I've been anxiously awaiting it's release on DVD, so I can share it with everyone I know. It may not be the shining pinnacle of perfect Zombedy, but it's right up there with the top brass.
Wasting Away (2007)
Ehhhhhh....
I was shown this movie by friends of mine who rented it and thought I would get a kick out of it. Lets just say any further recommendations by them will get screened first.
I've sat back and watched several attempts at zombie comedies come and go, most of them falling flat on their face, save for the gem "Deadheads". This movie was no exception.
The concept of zombies being like everyone else just slower... Sure it's somewhat fresh, but it's not entirely unique, and from what I've heard from other people, it's this movies crowning achievement in 'creativity'. Well, in entertainment, creativity will get you about as far as a boat made of bread.
With painfully forced acting and situational development, I kept checking my phone for the time again and again, waiting for the credits to roll.
I may have just not "GOT" the point of the movie... But it just wasn't funny, and wasn't good. Granted I've seen far worse, and it did what it could with it's budget, better than most low-rung Hollywood productions, so that's why I'm giving it a generous 4 out of 10.
The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009)
Don't Let Reviews Sway You Away
When I saw this movie on shelves, I had to see how horrible it was. I figured it was either gonna be good, or so bad that it would be good.
So I read the reviews... And was almost scared away from renting it. It sounded like it was just gonna be a suckfest beyond belief. But my wife, with a similar taste in comedy as I, was adamant. So I took the plunge...
And boy was it worth it.
As others have said, it HELPS to be a gamer, it helps to be nerdy... and it helps to have a general Cthulhu mythos knowledge, and more than anything, it helps to love B-Movies and their ilk. If you like Bruce Campbell style movies, this one's up your ally even without said Mighty Chinned Wonder being present.
The one-liners have become common household usage. (This is my sex face.) My bottom line? Give it a shot. If you hate it, you hate it... But it's worth the risk.
