Pirate Islands (2003)
Great show!
I know I shouldn't watch it (being after all 16 and above kid's shows) but there's something about this show that makes it really fun to watch. Maybe it is the sense of fun that pervades it, and the fact that most of the kids are good actors and there is real tension between Kate and Mars. Plus the idea of being in a computer game is fascinating.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Wow
The Two Towers is a brilliant film; it is not intended to be an exact replica of Tolkien's brilliant books (which I have read and consider to be amoungst the finest ever written) but instead it is a film adaptation. However it does suffer a little from sequel-itis; with the battle of Helm's Deep being drawn out for longer than necessary to 'jazz up' the closing parts of the film. Gollum, without a doubt, is the star of the film, brilliantly brought to life by a combination of computer effects and the work of actor Andy Serkis. Yes, it will be disapointing to some of Tolkien's fans who dislike the liberties Peter Jackson as taken with this book; but my opinion is that these changes have made the Two Towers both a darker film, and a more uplifting in places as characters make decisions that have a profound impact on their world.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Wow ... incredible
A masterful piece of work, this film is inspiring and uplifting. All cast members give excellent performances, and even though there are many special effects used, they enhance the story, and don't dominate it. It won't appeal to everyone, but for people who like action/adventure/fantasy this film is for you! I loved it (as you can tell).
Deep Impact (1998)
Moving and insightful
This film examines what human-kind would do if confronted by the threat of extinction, and as such is insightful. The premise, that life on Earth is threatened by a huge comet on a collision course with the planet, is one that we are having to come to terms with in the real world as well, making DEEP IMPACT a relevant film for us today. It's encouraging to see a film that doesn't rely on special effects but on a story. It's not perfect by any stretch, but the plot holes don't drag it down.
