Mermaid Down (2019)
For those with EXTREMELY HIGH suspension of disbelief or for ages 1-12
There are so many writing and/or script flaws - starts with 2 fisherman talking about how they'd be millionaires if they could catch a mermaid, so they go fishing for one that same night and catch one using a net and and nails and screws for bait. So if catching a mermaid is that easy how could catching one bring in millions? The captain decides it's best to cut off the mermaid's tail to prevent her from getting away (and I'm sure to make the rest of the story work) - this in itself raises some questions (if you still believe that they are rare to catch): Wouldn't the entire mermaid be worth more? Is it the tail that's worth millions and not the mermaid itself?
There were many other on screen flaws and cheats: It's obvious that the ship is secured somehow - it's not freely rocking/swaying in the ocean, it's totally still. The mermaid falls out of the net with dry hair, which remains dry the entire time after she's cut from the net and is on the deck of the ship. When she's fighting back on the ship, she uses her tail to hit things which go flying off into the ocean but we don't see the actual contact made with most of the objects which were masked by horrible edits. The acting was horrible, the only thing done well in this film were the sets, costumes and make-up.
Brightburn (2019)
Wow, took a chance with this and it paid off.
I knew nothing about Brightburn before watching it. This was Bad-Ass! I thought it was a great story, well acted and not for wimps! All of the character building and uneventful scenes kept my interest. And when the gore came it wasn't gore for gore sake, it was done when it was needed, original, done well and core!
After seeing it I read it was being pitched as "the evil Superman" - which is why you're seeing these comic-geek, whining reviews that it didn't live up to their expectations. Big mistake that they marketed it like that - because really, the story doesn't exploit the Superman thing other then he was an adopted space baby and that's it!
Radioactive Veteran (2016)
About a soldier who was part of the atomic bomb experiments back in the 50's
Short but well done documentary about a Marine who was ordered to be part of the atomic bomb experiments that they had in Nevada back in the 50's. Remember those old atomic bomb education films that the government put out where you would see soldiers holding up inside these long trenches in the desert, then you'd see the atomic bomb explode and under orders, you would see the soldiers get out of the trenches and run towards the blast! These exercises were to simulate the possibility of ground troops being involved in an atomic war. Sadly in their training films, the soldiers were given all this misinformation, one being that if you're close enough to get radiation sickness, then you'd be burned up by the blast and die anyway.
Marine Donald Guy, is one of these solders that took part in these tests and who eventually became sick from the radiation exposure. Donald with the help of his wife Mary seek medical assistance from the VA but are continuously refused, a month before Donald dies and after spending everything they had the VA finally agree to pay for his treatment but nothing else.
In this documentary Mary is somewhat of a hero as she's determined to seek justice to what had happened to her husband, and with the help of our other hero, attorney Jonathan Kelly, take on the task of getting that justice from the VA.
Children of God (1994)
Excellent story of life in a cult
A very thorough, beginning to end story of a woman entering the cult, then 20 years later finally leaving. I feel this can answer many viewer's questions of how could anyone join something so ridiculous, why would anyone stay, etc... Nobody would want to be part of anything like this, but of course people don't know about all the horrific things that go on when looking in from the outside, she probably thought this may have those answers some people have about life. Overtime, little by little, subtle things were introduced to her life from their leader and group, (being told how the outside world is an evil place, Jesus is coming for them, work for the army of god, must save the world, etc...) she accepted everything as it was all part of their mission from God and for Jesus. And of course for her children being born into it, that's all they know.
People wonder "How can people like ISIS exist? How can they believe that God wants them to kill people and by doing so, you'll go to heaven, etc
" Well this will answer your question it's no different.
This leader's approach was very different than most, when people think of cult leaders they think of people like Charles Manson, Jim Jones, etc... The Children of God leader was rarely seen in person by his members, but instead was seen thru his comic book type stories (almost like those little Chilton comic books). He was this really talented artist, making these comic book type stories involving him and the rules for his Children of God. The stories would address current events involving his group or about specific members (using their names). What a waste of talent and what a totally demented person he was. One girl was 17, she had lupus and needed medical assistance, Children of God believed that taking medicine showed that you're weak and that you don't trust God. She couldn't go outside because of her sickness so she would stay inside and read. Well reading books from the outside world was forbidden and in one of his comics he said that's why God gave her lupus. Then after she died that same year, in his comic he writes how she's in a better place now having sex with God etc
!!!!!!!!
Sinister 2 (2015)
Would have been really good but had 2 major flaws - I still liked it
I never saw the first one but will having read the reviews about how much better it was. Overall the acting was great! James Ransone - first time I've really seen him before, very interesting character, mild, sorta weak, but confident and he played such a nice guy so of course I thought he was going to be the bad guy, but this film didn't follow the normal formula. The films they played in the movie were awesome. Also how the light washed out the ghosts images, not a big deal effect, but it was really well done. Anyway all was going well, we see big, mean dad was back with the family (wife and their 2 sons), then it cuts away to another scene, then when we go back to the family, somehow the one little boy got both his parents and brother mounted on huge crosses (kkk style) out in the fields. How is that possible? As that was bothering me, when mom and son were untied and on the run to safety with the assist of "So & So" (James) little brother started chasing them with a short handled sickle, they were running for their lives. I mean, yeah that's dangerous, but nothing a baseball bat or a large pipe couldn't easily take care of. Just a little kid, but they were running for their lives! If it wasn't for those 2 parts, this would have been a well done movie.
The Dark Backward (1991)
When Blumps gives you the OK for product placement in your film, you've made it!
Your every worst nightmare of social awkwardness is here!
Marty, who's dream is to become a stand up comic, is setup like a tin can on a ledge and ready for target practice by everyone he knows. Those taking aim are...
-- Marty's bed ridden, jagged toenailed mother, who constantly keeps telling him "you're not funny!" as he's trying to show her his new comedy material.
-- Marty's best friend Gus, the god of "Insincerity", is there 100% of the way to help his best friend make it as a stand up comic. As Gus see's it "When Marty gets rich, WE ALL GET RICH!".
-- Marty's girlfriend who is sickened by the site of him.
-- Marty's Talent agent Jackie Chrome who's sense of talent is like that of Byte's the owner of the Elephant Man.
-- Marty's physician, Dr. Scurvy, who is your worst fear of what a doctor could be.
If you want to see a film about a "Victim", this is it! This was one of Adam Rifkin's first films, and what's so great about it is that not only did he manage to get an all star cast to play characters that you would never imagine them playing, but he also placed a lot of effort into the style of the film, giving it a great sense of uneasiness in sight and sound. Don't be fooled by his other films, this doesn't compare. This is the kind of film you make when you have nothing to risk!! Before I saw this I never thought too much of Wayne Newton, but after seeing him in this - I'm now a fan!! Also Bill Paxton gives the most energetic performance I've ever seen on film - WOW! Ever since The Dark Backward was first released, it remains one of my favorite films!
