Murder Is My Beat (1955)
could have done better
While watching this movie, all I could think about is it should have been done by RKO in 1950 with Robert Mitchum and Lisbeth Scott and definitely put some money into the production to avoid all of those semi-imposed scenes, which are so distracting. The plot was fine even though I figured everything out about 20 minutes into the movie.
Robert Shayne was truly an underrated actor. He started out with Warner Brothers making short westerns. As soon as I saw him, I yelled Lieutenant Henderson. That was his role on the Superman series. He was a solid professional that never got his big break.
Langdon was very stiff as usual and Peyton, by this this had lost her looks, which is usually why she was hired even thought she was always very competent on the screen. By this time her face was very puffy and her figure was a little plump.
The best acting came from the beautiful Tracey Roberts, who at 41 looked 25 and was built ever so fine. She was a yummy.
6 Souls (2010)
Start fast until a screeching halt
The movie started very well with an ominous air of mystery. However, it slowed down immensely in the middle with plot holes that the Titanic could move through easily. The end of the movie can be seen way before it happens. The city characters are as observant as anyone wearing a blindfold and ear plugs. One question: what would you do if you had a giant boil/burn growing on your back? The characters just scratched it and did nothing else. Brilliant!!!
Just Before I Go (2014)
nice feel-good film
At its heart, Just Before I Go is about how people perceive the same thing differently. First-time director Courteney Cox (of Friends fame) does a very proficient job of putting into motion, a premise ripe for exploration, this time penned by screenwriter David Flebotte (Desperate Housewives). If you've read the blurb, then you know that the protagonist is planning to do himself in, which gives the impression that Just Before I Go will be a dark comedy. Comedy yes, but not nearly as dark as you might imagine. The film succeeds in balancing humor and drama; the humor is solid and consistent without being overbearing, and it works to best effect due to the audience being able to empathize with the likable characters.
William Sean Scott gives this movie his all and he really shines. He is an exceptionally good actor and very under-rated. You travel with him in his transformation, rooting for him all of the time. Olivia Thirlby as Greta and Garret Dillahunt as "Lucky" are also excellent. Garret Dillahunt, a character actor whose face you may recognize, is all in with a tour de force as the domineering brother/ husband/ father/ cop named Lucky. Olivia Thirlby is sweet, vulnerable and beautiful. It was also good to see the great Clancy Brown, one of the best character actors of our generation, abet in a small but important part. Also, I was pleased to see the beautiful and talented Missi Pyle. I really wanted more of her and the always reliable Rob Riggle giving a top performance. And Connie Stevens showed everyone that she still has IT.
The humor is not for everyone (if you find masturbation offensive), but Just Before I Go kept me glued to the screen and chuckling away for 95 minutes
This was a very nice feel-good film. It is the kind of movie that will leave you smiling when it is over. Do yourself a favor, a buy this one and invite friends over.
Snowfire (1957)
very good family movie
This was a very good family movie. A bit of trivia would be that it was directed by brothers, Dorrel and Stuart McGowan and Melody and Molly Megowan were sisters and the daughters of Dorrell Magowen. The hero, Don Megowan was a very talented supporting actor and I always enjoyed his performances. He co-starred in the television series "The Beachcomber" and was a guest star in just about every western on television in the 50's and 60's. The was the star of Sam Katzman's "The Werewolf" and the incredible odd "Creation of the Humanoids". At his restaurant, Megowan's Clubhouse, located in North Hollywood, you could always meet a western TV actor. John Cason was also featured in "Snowfire" as the heavy, which he usually played. He was a WWII Marine vet and appeared in an astounding number of television and movie westerns. John's untimely death in 1961, at the age of 46, was a result of an automobile accident in which his friend accidentally drove off of the road while they were on their way to do some raccoon hunting.
Gunshy (1998)
very interesting movie
This was a very interesting movie. It was done on a very small budget and unfortunately it shows. There are no special effects or expensive action scenes. However, the acting takes you deep inside. Michael Wincott and Michael Byrne are especially good. Wincott is able to be scary, likable and vulnerable all at the same time. Byrne is an especially good smiling psycho. William Peterson is as dull and you have to wonder why anyone cares what happens to him. Diane Lane is pretty much wasted here. She is torn between the two main characters but you have to wonder what in the world she sees in Peterson. They could have added some minutes in the movie to see what Wincott and Lane are up to as they were the most interesting characters.
It is amazing to me that Michael Wincott never became an A-list star. He can play good guys and bad guys but is always interesting and believable.
