Ritual (2002)
Not Bad...
I have mixed feelings about this movie as I recently saw the newly released R1 edition. FIRST IT DOES HAVE THE CRYPTKEEPER IN IT!!! I was surprised that it didn't feature the all out action of Demon Knight or trashy fun of Bordello of Blood. Instead, it was a smartly written and even somewhat classy by "Tales" standards as it never goes for the over the top gore or even sex for that matter. It does have the TFTC feel and any fan most likely won't disappoint. It is truly a fitting end, if the series has to go. I just wish the TFTC feel was more prevalent in the CryptKeeper scenes. If you are a fan buy this and we can hope to see more from the Cyypt in the future.
Day of the Dead 2: Contagium (2005)
oh boy another cash-in!
There is no way this could live up to the hype of possibly having an unwanted and most importantly un-needed sequel. When I heard about it being on the net but as a German rip from the DVD. I knew it was an edited stripped down version so I am actually reviewing that. Well it actually has good premise and intentions but it falters in its execution. I know good film can be made for less than what this was made for so what went wrong? The story involves a strange disease that turns the victims into zombies...a premise common in zombie movies. This time its alien (or what I got from it). It covers from the beginning of NOLD (it has absolutely nothing to do with any Romero flick)to modern times.
Everything about this is wrong, acting is horrible and effects are even more amazingly bad. An example of this is when a guy gets directly infected and turns into basically a blob of flesh. It not once looks believable or neat. That blob of a man then gets up and for the most part resembles a red gorilla like thing. The zombies are bad and definitely are NOT SCARY! I am not a person who hates bad movies as I watch a fair share of them but this is just bad film making that I have never witnessed before. I love movies bad and good but this is bad in a spectacular way that I have never seen before...please spend your money on something else when this is released on DVD in the states. Support Romero's "Dead" trilogy (Yes, including Land) or Dead and Breakfast, Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead Trilogy, Almost anything but this mess. I hope this is helpful to anyone interested in this as, if you buy this it'll be a mistake and truthfully I watched it once and feel ripped off and I didn't pay for it!
The Fog (2005)
not half bad....
Well I just got back from the remake of "the Fog"... and actually had a good time...It is more or less the same concept just not as violent as the original. I actually have more respect for it cause John Carpenter/Debra Hill was producers of it. Since the DVD of the original is only $10, I recommend it over the remake. Or if you never saw the original see this one first, then watch the original. But if you are a Carpenter fan see this to support him. Only true detractors of this is that it should have been R-rated! That is my only complaint as it was as slick as it could have been, acting was also competent so if you go into it with an open mind and try not to be too comparing between the original and remake you should have a good time.
