Fallout (2024– )
8/10
Watch out, don't lose your head.
11 April 2024
Fallout does a great job capturing the unique tone that makes the games so great. An apocalyptic future suspended in time. That time being 1950's America. It's an ironic take on the Eisenhower period that takes the nuclear family a little too literally.

It's entertaining to watch the contrast between humour and violence that resembles the Coen brothers' best work, whereby the humour is genuinely funny and the violence has real stakes.

I was initially skeptical about this series. As a big fan of the games, it seemed like opportunistic studios just trying to capitalize on the "video game to TV" success of The Last of Us, but it's clear that between the big budget production, attention to detail and solid artistic choices (writing, acting and camera work all are exceptional), this is a passion project for Jonathon Nolan (brother of Christopher Nolan) and I think they've done a great job.

Whether you're a fan of sci-fi, western, comedy, action/adventure, or just big, world building entertainment, this show has a bit of everything.

Dads: Pilot (2013)
Season 1, Episode 1
Over-acted, under-written, unfunny and a little racist.
18 September 2013
"Dads" is the new comedy starring Giovanni Ribisi and Seth Green as video game designers (or higher-ups at a video game publisher, they never specify) whose lives are interrupted when their fathers (Peter Riegert and Martin Mull) come to live with them.

Where to begin on how painfully unfunny this pilot was. The majority of these "jokes" were either slapstick or racist quips while the laugh track emphasized just how bad they were. Ribisi is a good actor, but he gets stuck playing what is supposed to be the grounded role. He is married and seems to have a little more sense than his counterpart and doesn't receive one funny line. Seth Green, who is usually funny and likable, comes off as a hyperactive and annoying man child because of the script and his performance. One of the worst parts of this experience was watching Green overact as the laugh track roars behind him.

I don't see this show getting any better, but it can't get much worse. I see cancellation in this shows near future.
