Unbreakable (2000)
What did I watch?
Felt sleepy after watching 30 mins into the film. I then go to sleep for an hour and get up to continue. Then I felt sleepy again.
Since the rating is around 7/10 I thought maybe something exciting might happen later. Till almost the end of the game it's still slow and boring.
And the "shocking" and "brilliant" ending indeed shocked me to sleep.
I wonder who likes this film really? 5 year olds?
Kung fu (2004)
Didn't like it the first time I watched
I've never been a fan of Stephen Chow and have always thought he's just OK but overrated.
I also didn't like this movie the first time I watched it, finding it silly, just like his other works. His comedy to me seemed always forced and unnatural. I had the same opinion on this film too.
Nonetheless, after a few years I had watched it again and I changed my mind, believing it is a real good one, because it is actually not as shallow as it appears to be (exaggerating and silly), but you find a deeper meaning behind each scene.
Today I watched it again, I have to say it is a master piece in its own kind.
The title "Kung Fu" actually goes so well too, since "kungfu" itself in most movies are portrayed almost always as good as super power.
The Art of Self-Defense (2019)
Ambitiously failed?
I think the movie tries too hard to be both funny and black humor, as a result of which makes the whole story forcefully unnatural.
In summary, it failed on a challenging mission.
Dangal (2016)
Touching and interesting
Pro: It's an interesting story and inspiring, especially in the context of women in the Indian society. Otherwise you would not agree completely how their fathers treat/train their daughters. In the end, the father's words addressing the problems in the Indian society saved the movie from just an ordinary sports documentary. Plus, the shooting in the sports are realistic and enjoyable.
Con: Movie like this being predictable is predictable. Also stupid ideologies like nationalism, patriotism are also inevitable, sadly. It's the main reason I have to lower the score of movies promoting these.
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
I'd rate it 9 if I were at my twenties or so.
The story is fine but there is just so much lacking in other aspects. The stars I gave are all for the interesting story.
The Bank Job (2008)
It's an interesting story and I enjoyed watching. But that's all.
Story is great. Acting is fair. I'd give it a 7 star if it's a fabricated story but feel like giving 8 star after learning it's based on a true story.
Can't say where it's lacking but I just feel like it is a movie I'll forget about in a year.
I Am Legend (2007)
The cliche is too heavy and the main character is very dumb.
OK. If you want to see something new besides a zombie running at people movie, nothing to see here.
For some reasons the main character who the title claims to be a legend is dumber than an average Joe:
1. Emotionally go out to fight zombies with no good plan and no good reason, and he got caught like a moron.
2. Screaming at a woman (many times) who saved his life for no good reason rather than venting.
3. My personal bias towards Will Smith. I can't look at his "serious" face. To me he always looks like he's gonna burst out laughing in the next second.
A complete waste of my time to watch.
Upgrade (2018)
Much better than I had thought
The main idea of the story is really great and it actually makes a lot of sense (I just watched Elon Musk's Joe Rogan interview about AI.)
I think a lot of details and dialogues can still use some polish, then the film could be as good as the story of Matrix.
