Dune (2021)
Boring
It was just so darn boring. Not really much happened and even the things that did happen were *meh* at best. I can't believe I wasted two hours watching it. So disappointing. Seems like some fun ideas like the voice and the witches for example, maybe the books are better. The acting was kind of a nothing burger. Nothing that pulls you in on an emotional level. The sets are incredibly boring too, I mean I get it's the desert but at least the palaces could be interesting or beautiful. The score is lackluster, nothing special there. Cinematography also just kinda meh, nothing special. There is literally nothing redeeming about it, at least with B grade films they are a fun camp romp but this is just... nothing. Definitely not even worth a half hour of time, let alone 2 and a half! Skip it.
The Essex Serpent (2022)
So very disappointing.
I went into this looking forward to excellent acting and a fabulous period drama fantasy mystery. What I got was a period drama romance between a rich woman and a married religious leader. AND EVEN THAT SUCKED. I didn't feel the romantic chemistry or build up whatsoever. There actually is no fantasy element whatsoever as *spoiler* it's a whale and witchcraft isn't real. This is just set in our own world in the late 1800s in the dreary looking English countryside. There is no mystery, no investigation conducted and the truth is revealed simply by the "mysterious creature" washing up dead on the beach. That's it. Damn, I am so disappointed in this. So many elements I ADORE like the protagonist is a survivor of domestic abuse, she is an early feminist, the treatment of Autistic (seemingly) children in the Victorian era, science based themes, the hysteria of religious zealots, early medical development, like there is so much here that if they focused on one or two things it could have made a fantastic show. But as it is, every single theme falls flat and nothing is explored to any depth that might be impactful.
And what even is the point in the end? The married vicar's wife dies of TB and the protagonists continues to dig for fossils against a depressing, boring, colourless background. They get together for a chemistry-less last kiss.
I am gutted for the cast as they are all fabulous talented actors. The end product is not worth the first watch.
