Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
How to make greatness even better
Halfway thru watching this, I turned to my 11 year old son. His expression was one of pure joy and utterly caught up in the story.
Even is amped up, the range of art styles, the range of spider-people, the depth of story, performances. Everything is divine.
Picking up with Gwen, lost and out of focus, missing Miles who is letting spider work take over school.
Obviously they meet up and the fun kicks up. But when I say everything works it does. The laughs from Miles parents, the loss the Gwen's father for his lost daughter.
The music is a perfect fit again. This movie is just a joy, it's darker, bigger, and just outstanding.
The Rookie: Double Trouble (2023)
Utterly dreadful episode
These high concepts episodes are just not showing any respect to the audience. A fly in the wall premise of two criminals that look exactly like two cops. The two criminals are a couple as are the cops. This shows so little respect to the audience with the odds of this being real life. Sure they say that during the show, but the constant interviews with all the regular casts again points to disrespect of the audience.
And it just keeps going, the criminals are openly called Dim and Juicey, again would the actual police show such disrespect to the public, criminal or not
I like a lot of what this series does but these episodes are showing a decline of standards along side the body cam episodes.
Girl in the Basement (2021)
Cheap Abuse of a true horror
The real story of the crime of Josef Fritzl is more horrid than this cheap imitation. Here the american version, for america has no cases like this within its borders. Here the ceiling in the basement is high and room plentiful. It's still horrific but read up about the case for a true perspective on the horrors of this man.
Performance wise, it's a tv movie but better than most but still has a certain sheen to proceedings even through the dirtiness of matters. Judd is very good in the controlling role but I can't help but think, the way this is handled to sanitise for the American market cheapens the horrors from Austria.
The Blacklist: Boukman Baptiste (No. 164) (2022)
I officially resign
I've stuck by this show since the start and James Spader is still superb. However every week it lumbers from one mistake to the next. Now a known criminal associate is in the FBI despite being a grandfather, at what 50/60 +
Suspending belief for a show is sometimes necessary but this show has pushed my patience too far.
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Outstanding
I am not really up on the Ms Marvel comics, as I am of other properties therefore I came to this with intrigue.
Firstly this show is a joy, the cast are fantastic and the direction is top drawer. It's fun, it flows and it has its heart in its perfectly airbrushed suit sleeves.
The thing with comics as a kid is the imagination, the thought of if I could do that, what would I do. This shows captures that perfectly.
The background animations are brilliant in helping the story telling.
My 10 year old watched this with me and enjoyed it greatly and being able to see the school parts really made his day to bring the story home.
I remember waiting to see Captain Marvel at the movies and having a little girl come out the building saying "I want to be like Carole", I hope this inspires more girls to be more like Kamala, tolerant, Fun and with a passion. IMac is a star.
You (2018)
Seasons 1 & 2 great not so loving season 3
I adored this show thru seasons 1 & 2. It was gripping as much as it could be and the finale at the end of season two had me wanting more. But season 3 isn't delivering. Firstly the secondary characters, I have no love or basic liking for any of them. And Joe and Love trying to hold it together, two fine actors, but this seems flimsy.
What If...?: What If... Thor Were an Only Child? (2021)
Not understanding the hate for this episode
So many people saying this feels like a kids cartoon, what with one night stands, drinking partying and I obviously missed something in my childhood. This episode is just fun, Thor the hard drinking, hard partying, probably closer to the Norse legends than the MCU norm. It was especially great to hear so many actual character voices, from the movies. A treat for sure, and a bit of a surprise after some darker episodes of late, zombies, dead avengers etc. And comedy is fitting with Thor after Ragnarok and upcoming love and thunder.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Way better than the first suicide
However something still niggles me, the spirit of the squad is there and Gunn is not afraid of the mission. However something just doesn't click and the big bad being a plushie like creature, doesn't help in my humble opinion.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Doesn't feel like an xmen movie
This is simply flat, the actors seem dulled, Jennifer Lawrence wanted an quick out, and I understand why.
Sansa, is not good in this, surely there are deeper actress available for this
WandaVision: On a Very Special Episode... (2021)
They keep getting better
Episodes 1-3 made wife disappointed, as a House of M fan I loved the build up and episode 4 was spot on. Episode 5 allows the paranoia to grow and the end scene, when you see the silver hair is this the MCU or Mutant Quicksilver, yes the mutants are now licensed to to MCU, much as I love the MCU quick silver the Xmen version hahah a better story.
Love it, bring in the xmen and Prof Xavier and make the House of M spark even brighter.
Prodigal Son: Silent Night (2019)
Sean Pertwees accent, how did that get past casting
It has to be said, I like Sea. As an actor in many things but he seems completely out of depth with this accent, especially when Sheen and Tom are both British and carrying the accents
