Cemetery Junction (2010)
Witty, young, fresh and funny!
I loved this film from start to finish. An absolute pleasure to watch! Quick and witty dialogue, feel-good story line and painfully funny, equip with fantastic characters! Not surprisingly brilliantly written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant! An absolute delight, Ricky and Steven should be very proud of this masterpiece.
I couldn't get over how good the plot was, and how well written! The musical selection was equally fantastic, really setting the tone of the film well. Also a surprising movie, not only spectacularly hilarious, but sometimes heart wrenchingly touching.
Young stars are budding, real talent has been discovered through the making of this film. Particularly by the young Tom Hughes who I thought was phenomenal in this role! Also good performance from Christian Cooke, Filicity Jones, Ralph Finnes and of course Ricky Gervais! Feel-good comedy, fresh, witty and extremely funny, written to perfection! Highly recommended!
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Attend the tale of a masterpiece...
One of my all time favourite films! Tim Burton at his best. A true piece of artwork. Stunning visuals, an entertaining and painfully tragic plot, musical brilliance by Steven Sonheim and extraordinary performances from the entire cast!
Tim Burton has always made visually stunning films, but with this one, he's really outdone himself. What I love about his films is that he never tries to please Hollywood with his movies like a lot of other directors do.
The film, set in the mid 1800's of dark and depressing London, leads us through the eyes of the tragically corrupted Benjamen Barker. Torn away from his beautiful wife and baby girl for crime he did not commit by the malicious Judge Turpin, is sent away, and after 15 years in exile, he escaped with the help of a young and naive sailor 'Antony', hell bent on revenge against Turpin. When he is reunited with his old neighbour, the comical yet delicate Mrs Lovett, a baker who use cats as the meat for her infamous pies, the two come up with a maliciously sinister plan, leading to many consequences...
A tragically sad twist at the ending, which made the dark story all the more sinister. Sad movie, but with some black comedy elements, especially in the famous song 'Little Priest'.
Spectacular performance from everyone, but particularly out two leading characters; Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp)and Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs. Lovett). Johnny played Sweeney Todd to perfection, making him sinisterly dark, but although he's playing a bad guy, he makes you feel very sympathetic towards him, brilliant. In my opinion, he should of won the Oscar for best actor that year at the Oscars. It came as a surprise to me that Helena wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for this amazing portrayal. Playing a gentler, subtler Mrs Lovett, one of the best portrayals of this character I've ever seen! The unrequited love story between Mrs.Lovett and Sweeney was so heartbreaking to watch, even more heart breaking than the plot itself at times, I thought Helena played it beautifully! Also with the help from a fantastic supporting cast; Alan Rickman (Judge Turpin), Timothy Spall (The Beadle), Ed Sanders (Toby), Jamie Campbell Bower (Antony) and Jane Winser (Johanna).
Stunning set designs, and surprisingly fantastic vocals from the entire cast, also something that doesn't get mentioned a lot, is the interestingly designed costumes, bravo to Coleen Atwood! And of course the breath taking directing by genius Tim Burton, a film that will have you on the edge of your seat, but at times watching it through your fingers!
Highly recommended! Musical Horror at it's best!
The Runaways (2010)
Edgy teenage biopic...
When I saw the trailer for this film, I thought it looked brilliant! Personally, I don't like the Runaways, but I was interested to see what they were going to do with this story.
I didn't think the plot was any good, there didn't even really seem like there was one, just the starting off of the group then the downward spiral, leading to the band's dramatic break up.It didn't seem like there was much in between.
However the film was saved by the brilliant performances from Kristen Stewart, Micheal Shannon and especially Dakota Fanning. Kristen Stewart played Joan Jett to perfection. Micheal Shannon playing Kim Fowley was very good, but very unpleasant to watch, but that's just the character. I thought Dakota Fanning was the best thing about the film, she played the young Cherie Currie brilliantly, always making you experience everything Cherie goes through, great actress!
I did enjoy this movie, but like I said before, not a great plot, but is worth watching for the terrific performances!
Nowhere Boy (2009)
Musically brilliant and powerfully touching...
One of my favourite biopic films ever. Beautifully shot by Sam Tayolor Wood, and wonderfully acted by Aaron Johnson (John Lennon), Anne Marie Duff (Julia Lennon), Kristen Scott Thomas (Aunt Mimi)and Thomas Brodie Sangster (Paul McCartney).
The compelling story of a rebellious John Lennon's adolescence, and the birth of the Beatles. Showing the struggle with his strict Aunt Mimi and the reunion with his mother, Julia.
A wonderfully moving story of a young boy trying to cope with all life's troubles that face him. Quick and witty dialogue, captivating characters, musical genius and a sentimental and powerfully touching story- this film has it all! Other than that, there's not much more I can say about this terrific movie, you'll have to watch it and see what I mean when I say it's a phenomenon. HIGHLY Recommended!!!
The Last Song (2010)
Potentially good story, but lacking something...
I wouldn't say this is a bad movie, I actually quite enjoyed it, but something I wouldn't feel the need to watch too often.
Ronnie (Miley Cyrus) and her younger brother, Jonah (Bobby Colemen) , are dropped off my their mum(Kelly Preston)to stay with their dad (Greg Kinnear)over the summer at his house on the beach. At the beginning of the movie, Ronnie comes off as a moody and rebellious teenager, with a shockingly bad attitude towards her father. As the movie continues, Ronnie meets a boy called Will (Liam Hemsworth). You can guess what happens, because soon enough they start going out together. Ronnie and her dad's relationship improves as the movie continues too, and she starts to feel terribly guilty when her and her little brother are shocked with the news of their dad having cancer.
The acting by Miley Cyrus, at times is quite good, but often over acted. Bobby Colemen (Jonah) and Greg Kinnear (dad) were the best in it, and made the movie as a whole a lot more realistic. Liam Hemmsworth (Will), like Miley, at times could be alright, but then sometimes showed no emotion and made it quite boring to watch.
The relationship between Ronnie and Will was very cute, and really showed chemistry on screen. Ronnie's relationship with her father came off very well, and was acted (more Greg Kinnear) brilliantly.
A good story, with a lot of potential, but just lacking certain elements, probably the acting from Miley and Liam, which as I've said before was quite good at points, but confusingly bad at others.
A sweet movie, with touching relationships. Is also quite funny in parts, with OK dialogue. I would recommend it, but not the sort of film I would be too keen to watch too often.
Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Stylish re-telling of the classic romance
Sexy, modernised, and tragically romantic, Baz Lurman's 'Romeo + Juliet' is a beautiful visionary, and a new way of looking at the romantic tale.
The cool and hip version of the romantic story is set in the beautiful city of Veraona. The art direction and cinematography alone is enough to captivate the audience. Brilliant film editing as well.
Performances from Harold Perrineau (Mercutio)and Leonardo Dicaprio (Romeo) definitely stole the film. Harold Perrineau, not only giving a brilliant dramatic performance, but also injecting some comedy into the film. Leonardo DiCaprio also gives an incredible performance as Romeo, showing him to be very loving and caring, but also a tortured character, searching for happiness. Although Claire Danes plays Juliet's innocence and youthfulness quite well, I think she makes Juliet unlikable, and I didn't feel like I could warm to her as much as Romeo.
The tragic ending comes as no surprise, as we've all known the story for so long. But Leo and Claire made it believable and very moving.
A modern, teenage themed phenomenon. Beautifully shot, with great performances. Highly Recommended.
The Fine Art of Love: Mine Ha-Ha (2005)
Great. Chilling and eerie...
I loved this film! I can understand why some people would have a few issues with it, as it is quite violent and disturbing in some parts, but I see it as a truly remarkable story.
The film takes place in the early 20th Centry, Thuringia, Germany in an orphanage for girls in the middle of nowhere. The girls have no idea where they come from, and don't have any idea about what life is like outside the strict orphanage. However, soon enough, some of the girls start asking questions that can lead to fateful consequences...
I loved the eeriness of it, it made it more compelling to watch. The sets and cinematography were outstanding. Brilliant performances by most of the cast, but particularly by Hannah Taylor Gordon (Irene) who I thought was incredible in it.
I thought the love story and friendship between Irene and Hidalla was very sweet and a little moving at times. The love story distracts from the gruesome plot line, however I think this is a good thing because it gives the audience something else to focus on.
The only thing I found disappointing in this movie was the tragic and disturbing ending. IF YOU DON'T LIKE SAD MOVIES, THEN DON'T WATCH THIS.
But overall, a good movie, which I would gladly watch again.
