Jumper (2008)
showed real promise
I held off watching this for as long as possible but after seeing the trailer a huge number of times i eventually gave in. Jumper isn't a bad movie, it's just not really quite sure of what it want's to be and i think a lot of that has to do with the casting, namely, Hayden Christensen. After turning in a fantastic performance in 'Factory Girl' i was really disappointed with how he played the character of David Rice, his mysterious persona just didn't fit the geek turned cool guy and the film suffers because of this. The concept is superb and there's some great shots of stunning architecture in the worlds best cities; the action sequences are really good and Jamie Bell shines through in the supporting cast but it's largely hit and miss.
Watch it on a Saturday afternoon when you don't want to employ much brain power and you won't be disappointed.... unless you're a huge Christensen or Samuel L. Jackson fan...
Brooklyn Rules (2007)
don't let this one out of Brooklyn
I'm a huge mob film fan and The Sopranos was one of the greatest things to ever happen to my life so i expected 'Brooklyn Rules' to further affirm my belief that being a mobster is the greatest thing a man can do... unfortunately it didn't really help a great deal.
As i always seem to end up saying, this certainly wasn't a bad movie, i just expected a bit more from Terence Winter. The plot is very typical, three young kids grow up in the same neighborhood, one turns over to the mob lifestyle, the others follow different paths... i won't spoil you're enjoyment but yeah it's very typical, it reminded me a lot of 'The Black Donnellys' television series if it was set in the 80's. Mena Suvari is superb, Freddie Prinze Jr. struggles to grasp the new york accent and Alec Baldwin is... well... Alec Baldwin.
If you enjoy any mob film then definitely check this out as it won't harm you one bit but if you're just looking for a casual watch then you're better off digging out 'A Bronx Tale' again.
Wanted (2008)
slick
When this was released way back in June, i had every intention of spending my hard earned money and seeing it at the cinema but for one reason or another i ended up missing out. So 5 months and one huge Christmas advertising campaign later i picked up the DVD and i was not disappointed.
With the amount of comic book movie make-over's occurring on a monthly basis, this adaption of Mark Millar's graphic novel series could well have fallen by the way side, but thanks to some fantastic action sequences and stellar performances by Jolie, McAvoy and Morgan Freeman this summer blockbuster attempt really impressed me. The plot is very Spiderman-esquire and does enough to sustain interest throughout; moreover it leaves a certain degree of suspense at the end so i'm sure we can expect a sequel for 2009/2010. Definitely worth the purchase, if only to stare at Jolie for an hour and a half.
A Knight's Tale (2001)
A Great Film
I was drawn to this film mainly due to the acting talent and this is where it really pays off. The storyline is excellent and the environment is very well captured but it just wouldn't be the same without the raw talent of Heath Ledger and Shannyn Sossamon. Heath thrives in this film as he shows off many sides to a well oiled character and Shannyn displays a remarkable performance for an actress who has never appeared in a major film before. The supporting cast also put on a superb showing bringing this picture to the next level. A great concept and a stunning film filled with comedy, romance and action, you won't be disappointed.

Dog Soldiers (2002)
Is this a comedy.....No chance
I went into Dog Soldiers expecting a mix of black comedy and suspense, what i got was a mix of hairy plastic things hopping about the place and a Scottish accent that was really getting on my nerves. Sure Dog Soldiers was okay......for a werewolf movie but if its comedy and horror you want go try Evil Dead. Although, despite all its faults Dog Soldiers is still a relatively okay film, there are a few suspense filled moments and the acting is commendable. So if you want a slight comparison think an average cut down Evil Dead with a few werewolves thrown into the equation and you won't be far off.

40 Days and 40 Nights (2002)
It's not all about sex.....well maybe it is
After reading some of the reviews for this film i thought about giving it a miss but my male instincts told me it was a must see and i am a self confessed American Pie fan so it couldn't be that bad.......and it wasn't at all, in fact far from it, along with American Pie 2 this is probably the best romantic comedy I've seen all year.
Now admittedly i have to confess this movie isn't as funny as some other teen comedies out but i found the storyline in this to be something a bit different and it worked, but to be honest i don't think it would have worked if it hadn't been for some commendable acting and of course Shannyn Sossamon looking as amazing as she does.
Personally i think this film has a deeper meaning than just a vow of celibacy, it's more the effect sex has on a relationship and if your a 16/17 year old watching this film you should be able to see that better than a 40 year old movie critic who's still enjoying playing The Pianist over in his head again.
So my final word on this movie, your either gonna like it or not, i think it really depends on how much you can relate to the movie and how attractive you find Shannyn Sossamon to be or Josh Hartnett of course, if your a young person go see it, trust me you won't be disappointed.

True Romance (1993)
Tarantino shoots....He Scores!!
Firstly I'd like to state that this is the greatest movie i have ever seen and after a success like Reservoir Dogs i really can't see how Tarantino can keep producing these unbelievable films but he does. He is also a bless on many actors and actresses as this film proves, Hollywood and the world owe him a lot. The storyline and the acting in this film are absolutely outstanding, Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette thrive in the leading roles and with the likes of Brad Pitt and Samuel L. Jackson supporting them, the film indeed oozes talent. I would advise any sane human being to see this film as soon as possible.
