Mortal Kombat (2021)
Enjoyable adaptation of game
Im usually worried when a film comes out based on a game because so many are dreadful: SMB, Double Dragon, Streetfighter, MK: Annihilation, etc, but this was quite good. I wasnt expecting it to be as good as Mortal Kombat 1995, but i was surprised how good it actually turned out to be.
The fight scenes didnt drag on too long which i find gets old and most didnt go along w/ the horrible trope of: good guy fights bad guy, good guy is nearly defeated to then come back from that and win the fight. The film also had some pretty funny moments and lines during some of the slower scenes. The call backs to moments of play or scenes from the games that came out of the 90's was a nice touch, like when Scorpion reappears near end and uses some of his famous finishing moves or how some people became they way they are, like Jax's arms.
Overall, I felt is was enjoyable and nearly on par w/ the original film.
Hell's Angels (1930)
Watching is this is an experience, but not an enjoyable one m
I've seen films from the same time period that have been worse and a lot more have been better. It takes around 45 minutes for the more fast paced portion of the film to occur due to a reason for the later tension in the film to make sense; this could have been just as entertaining if a card describing this had been put up or cutting 90% would not have taken away any of the story.
The worst part by far is the acting; nearly everyone was either horrifically overacting or had never acted before. The best actors were the old maid, the extras at the bar and the prisoner who was shot by firing squad.
Some of the special effects were really good, which made for enjoyable moments but then there is moments like the laughably badly edited attack plane that crashes straight down in a facepalm inducing way (it would have been just as impactful if a trombone making the womp womp noise occurs after the loss). I wish that was the only moment that occurs, but its not. The aerial battles are pretty fun to watch but Hughes managed to turn even those fighting scenes into cringeworthy moments like the conversation between one of the leads and a man nicknamed baldy who it appears are trying to be funny while waving to eachother and telling eachother stories while nowhere near eachother, in planes, in the middle of dogfights while others are dying.
The story itself isnt all that enjoyable if you remove the bad acting, the bad special effects and the abysmally slow pacing.
I had a lot of hope for this movie because i had heard good things about it, its been ranked pretty highly on various list and some things in the first were pretty new for the time. I almost feel like i watched a different film than those rating it a 10. My review isnt comparing it to film today or actors, i just know things can be done better during that time because i have seen movies where everything is better.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
An really enjoyable film with a few issues.
I found the latest film in the franchise to be an interesting way to end it. It wasnt an amazing film but it did keep me entertained for the most part and it did fill in holes and questions i had from the prior films. I dont see how some people can gice it some of the ratings they did though; a 10 seems insane in that at no point that viewer found any issue with the film, character, a bland part, etc? How is a 1 or 2 possible as well? You are saying that at no point in 2hrs you enjoyed a moment of the film? How did you finish it if you hated it that bad? Nothing was redeeming? Ok.
I though that having the origin of Rey being the opposite of what i would have suspected was a neat twist, then making her to be stronger than any Jedi i have ever seen was pretty rad.
There was quite a few moments in the film that i wish would have been cut down in length for one reason or another (boring, long winded, doesnt add to story, cheesy, etc) but that wasnt a whole lot of moments. It did bring back some characters from prior movies which was a near nod to those films, like the originals but it also felt like they were going for cheap nostalgia tricks at the same time.
The special effects throughout the film were pretty good but felt more video game-ish than movie, i dont know if thats bad or good. There was also some pretty horrific dialogue uttered once in a while. While much of this i didnt really notice at first; i was able to once i backed up the film or discussed with others later.
Overall, id say this film was a 7 or 8. Im not going to make comparisons of it to the originals because thats unfair to compare it to something so much pop culture, nostalgia, memories, etc are tied to, but i understand why its difficult for so many to distance the 2 because they are connected by a story line. It was a pretty good film, far from perfect but quite entertaining and I've really enjoyed watching what Rey and Finn have had to deal with in them.
Mortdecai (2015)
Quirky story but not all that funny.
I went in to this movie expecting to enjoy Johnny Depp being a bumbling character, since I rarely dislike a film he is in. After watching almost the entire film I found that there wasnt much in the way of humor; it seemed like the person who wrote the script kept forgetting who the target audience is and how to make humor for them. According to most reviewers of this film, the reason for my lack of finding the film humorous is due to the fact that i just "didnt get it' or I dont understand the humor. This might be shocking to some of the reviewers but it is possible to understand why something should be funny, get where the humor is coming from or any other variables like this and not find that thing funny. Another issue with the humor was repeating the same statement or action as funny that wasnt great the first time. I also didnt understand why they presented Johnny Depps character in a way that its impossible to root, support or have sympathy for him.
Since the film was geared to be comedy and not a drama or action film, without portions that make you laugh the story itself becomes pointless. I Dont blame the actors for this lacking humor because i doubt they were the lines who decided to repeat phrases over and over that werent funny the first time or have their character being reprehensible at worst and wooden at best. This could have been a great movie if the actors could have played their characters less juvenile, the dialog wasnt as hokey, and fhe writers knew their target audience. Its too bad that the humor wasnt the dark or dry humor i love because this film had the plot, story, setting and cast to be a hilarious.
True Blood (2008)
Amazing start but lef me down in later seasons
The first season of this show and for a while after, it was easy to tell yourself that the premise is possible: Vampires and people living in an uneasy but working cohabitation. As vampires started to rank up in society and become more well known, it stretched the believability a bit much but I was still able to enjoy it; it wasn't until the addition of werewolves, shape shifter, fairies, etc it became more and more difficult to understand. At a certain point, the show moves so far away from the believability of the first season or two that it was difficult for me to enjoy. There is also the disappearance or death of some of the characters I like so much (Russell Edgington and Godric to name a few) at the beginning that was also bothersome. That's why I could only give it a 7 and not a 9.
