Interstellar (2014)
Interstellar!!!!
When Christopher Nolan directs, Matthew McConaughey stars and Hans Zimmer composes I instantly know I could be in for a treat. Journey into space with Cooper (McConaughey), the last astronaut left on an Earth near the end of existence. He and a group of explorers travel to a mysterious wormhole which could help them migrate to galaxies and dimensions beyond our own in order to save what's left of humanity.
I walked into the cinema with sky high expectations before watching Interstellar, and it did not disappoint, the film is great. Although it is not perfect, actors like Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon don't perform at their highest potential, and it often seemed like Christopher Nolan struggled to piece the film together. But with an interesting concept and scientifically accurate theories it will still have your attention and have your heart racing from beginning to end.
At its core, Interstellar is a tale of love between father and daughter. The relationship between Cooper and Murph (played by Mackenzie Foy, the strange CGI child from Twilight) is truly heart- warming. This is a completely different ball park for Nolan, and it's fantastically executed. We feel and care for their bond and it brings more depth and emotion to the story. However it does feel as if it is the cement that keeps it all together and without it the whole thing would topple over, giving the idea that the story isn't as complete as it should be.
Without a doubt the film is beautiful. The world created by Christopher and Jonathan Nolan is visually stunning. From the authenticity of the icy planet which is "Stark but undeniably beautiful," to the near perfect atmosphere created by composer Hans Zimmer's monumental soundtrack, Interstellar has us in aw from beginning to end as we astound in the elegance, refinement and grace of this world.
Matthew McConaughey is the crown jewel of the film, his performance has assured his place in today's acting royalty, and this is the performance that certifies him as well and truly "back." It is heart-breaking, and it feels like every time this film had me well and truly engaged he was on the screen. Some of the best sequences show nothing but his face when he slogs through this disastrous, melancholy and devastating mission he is on, and I would never take his place. He makes us feel his emotion. I thought about how it would affect me more than once, and that in its own way is terrifying.
Interstellar is certainly not Nolan's best directional work, (Inception, with Leonardo DiCaprio being my personal favourite) although it's splendid in so many ways. McConaughey's sensational performance is required due to the mediocrity of supporting performances by Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. But as expected the cinematography, visual effects and complexity of the film is brilliant. This once again proves that Christopher Nolan is one of the best in the business, with his consistency and intelligence shining through yet again. Perhaps more than ever.
The Walking Dead: Strangers (2014)
This is what I like to see
I lost interest in the Walking Dead quite some time ago, and even the season 5 premiere didn't catch me, i felt that the show was losing its story. However Strangers has completely grabbed me back.
These people form Terminus are in their own way terrifying, and give a really creepy, strange and sinister feeling to the show. It actually surprised me to find that those watching were the men from Terminus and i feel that cannibalistic behaviour is probably the most interesting and exciting feature to add to a post apocalyptic show/film. I don't know what to expect from this Priest and the church but its definitely building up tension successfully and i am excited to find out.
I definitely think that some improvements in terms of characters are needed such as Maggie not seeming to care about Beth, but at this rate season 5 could be a winner, and looks as if it could include the best story line in The Walking Dead yet, so lets hope the writers can impress just like they did in last nights episode. For the first time since season 2 The Walking Dead has left me looking for more.
The Walking Dead: No Sanctuary (2014)
Entertaining but lazy
For an entire half of a season they built up tension for what Terminus could become, however once again the writers have completely wasted their time. Its much too rushed and its starting to lose purpose. This isn't the first time that they have thrown away a solid story, others include Lizzy and the claimers. Personally i think they should have at least tried to get like three or four episodes with them stuck in Terminus and this sort of thing is what is losing The Walking Dead interest, people want a good story not a rushed one with an overuse of action.
However, saying that the episode was still enjoyable. There was some well tension built action sequences, a nice little emotional moment towards the end with Judith, and a cliffhanger than definitely interests me and makes me want to see more, and see how they can develop Morgans story from here on, i just hope they don't keep rushing things like this because it would be a shame.
Godzilla (2014)
Boring, Stupid and Downright awful
Other than the first 25 minutes or so of this film it was terrible. Bryan Cranston made an excellent performance which gave me more hope that it would be good however from the moment he died it didn't entertain me from then on.
There were some very poor and boring action sequences and by the end of the film i just wanted them to stop.
The story was probably the worst thing and the writing was just lazy. Again not including Bryan Cranstons emotional and entertaining moments there was nothing actually telling the story it is trying to tell. It tries to keep a story through Ford and his family but lets face it does anyone really care about them.
Overall this film just didn't impress, i will admit it had some great special effects but the film itself was poor and i lost interest quite early in and it was not able to get it back.
