Cyberbully (2011)
not bad, but failed to make the impact intended.
First, it's possible for a pretty girl to get bullied. One of the "popular" girls at my school committed suicide because people commented on how pretentious she was (like all the other girls at high school are such saints...), just like in the movie. Saying that the main character could never have been bullied because she's not fat or ugly is kind of ignorant, and insulting for people who have been bullied because a. it ignores the girls who do look like the main character who had been bullied, and b. it says that people who are bullied ARE fat and ugly, and not pretty like the main character. Maybe, instead of paying attention to how real the movie seemed, people should have paid attention to the message of the movie, which was to watch what you say online, because you can't see who reads it and who you offend, like people are doing right now on this page, laughing at the suicide scene and saying the character isn't believable because she isn't ugly.
That being said, this movie had it's good points, and a good message, but it watered things down in an effort to be delicate to the audience, and it didn't make the impact it intended(here are spoilers). It ends with everyone all happy again, everyone's friends again, and things worked out perfectly. Unfortunately, when you're trying to make an impact, feel good endings don't cut it. It makes the whole movie seem like a bad dream to the characters. In "No one would tell", a movie on abuse, the main character dies. It doesn't give you a happy feel good ending, but the movie sticks with you, and the message sticks with you. it doesn't say, look, this girl was abused, but it's okay because everything turned out happy, it says look, people die from abuse. look at what it does to their families and their friends, look at why you should tell someone. This movie could have done the same thing and made the same impact. Instead of having the character fumble and fail at opening the pill bottle, which you all find so humorous for reasons beyond me, she could have succeeded. Had she, the movies message would have become more real. It would have depicted how teens actually DO lose their lives to this sort of thing, it would have shown what it does to the people left behind, it could have shown the remorse of at least some of the students who caused it, the movie would have stuck because it did something you didn't expect, and, since the suicide part is only halfway through, they could have spent more time developing the characters and developing the bullying into something that did seem more real. I will comment, however, that it IS completely unbelievable that the antagonist would victimize the protagonist, because the protagonist simply said that she believed people should wait for sex.it's not like she said "wait for sex...unlike Lindsay" or anything, and she wouldn't have been targeted for that alone.
Finally, simply blocking the bully does not erase the problem. Just because you can't see what they are posting, doesn't mean they're not posting things about you. It doesn't have to be on YOUR wall to be about you, and just because you can't see it, doesn't mean that everyone else can't. Had the character blocked the antagonist, would it have stopped her from posting the video made, for example? No. The character just wouldn't be able to see what everyone was ridiculing her on, but they'd still be ridiculing her at school. That wouldn't help the problem, it might even make it worse.
