Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Disappointing
I think if this hasn't come as the conclusion to half the story lines to something so brilliantv it wouldn't have been half as disappointing. It utterly failed to live up to the high standards set in the last seven seasons.
1. Right from the start the battle tactics were ridiculous. Use of cavalry in an unsupported charge at an unscouted enemy. The pit of spikes they then stand in front of. The castle they refuse to use until most of them are dead. The fact they only had six archers and didn't prepare any kind of seige defence (oil, rocks). When brave heart did a better job.
Then there was the dragons. Kept back until the only thing that could hurt them arrived. Stupid.
2. Inconsistency. Remember harrehal. It's melted stone work. Melted by dragons. Dragon fire melts stone. Unless Jon hides behind it. Then there is the wights breaking out of stone sarcophagi when the Wight taken to kings landing seemed completely stumped by a wooden box.
Also I'm fairly sure we established the other white walkers control some of the dead at hardhome, didn't we? Well now the whole thing is dependant on the night king. So what was the point in the other walkers and craster's sacrifice of his sons?
Over all, I'm just left disappointed that they couldn't manage something worthy of at least the doors up to now, of not the books.
After Life (2019)
It's not that funny, but it's so much more than that
After life started slowly, or so I thought. It didn't make me laugh out loud. But then part way through the second episode I realised it wasn't supposed to be like that. After life is more of an emotional ride, where occasionally you laugh. And the laughter is the perfect companion to the sadness and emotion the rest of the show creates. One of my favourite shows this year.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)
Good fantasy for kids
Yes this borrowed a lot from lion the witch and the wardrobe and alice in wonderland, but it's a kids film. I find reviews in here for kids films rod9culous. Do kids like it? Yes. At least my daughter did. Then it is good. As an adult it inspired the sense of wonder that drew me to the fantasy genre as a child. I loved the world even if the concept was somewhat old. The story itself was simple and reused, but so was avatar. Sometimes the old ones are the best.
