Smoking nightmarein
24 February 2022
An otherwise good film is marred by constant cigarrete smoking of Brad Cooper et. Al. They must really cashed in with the tobacco industry deal. Multiple scenes include "smokes*.....overbearingly so. Toss in Rooney Mara's compulsive chocolate earing . That said. There is agreat performance by David Strathairn . Set decorations and cinematography are great as well.

DeCaprio smokes while Sierra Leone implodes
1 September 2016
DeCaprio refining his skills in a most powerful movie.I will not repeat all that has already been stated. But,I point out the terribly annoying amount of RIDICULOUS attempts of L.D. trying to smoke cigarettes.I wonder if he even knew how pathetic that was. However, movie is well done. The depictions and actions of people were well portrayed. However,in reality, they were even worse than depicted. Locales were excellently chosen.Extras, for the most part, did a great job depicting the terror and horror that Sierra Leone endured. The plight of families, the torture and slaughter of the forced laborers, and the horrendous impressing of children to train as soldiers, the maiming of the villagers and the burning of the villages AND villagers themselves are not made up by Hollywood story-tellers. It happened and is still happening in the Blood Diamond nations of the world. People should not forget the true history here...that of humanity and decency that does NOT exist as we we would hope The struggle goes on.

A classic and unique movie
14 May 2006
To Hell And Back rates as one of the truly classic and unique movies of our time. To have Audie Murphy himself have to remember and "relive" his war experiences, having been removed from them for only ten years, is unprecedented. The movie is the forerunner of such movies as We Were Soldiers Once...and Black Hawk Down. Although Col. Tom Moore was only an on scene adviser he also relived some of the scenes(his own admission) that were depicted in "..Soldiers..." Black Hawk Down depicted actual footage of the battle. The historical and personal accuracy of these movies is tremendous. Audie, however paid a bitter price. His war experiences tormented him the rest of his life with constant insomnia, depression and anxiety. I was lucky enough to meet him at Suffolk Downs Race Track in 1959 or 1960. I always wondered what became of his siblings and sister. Audie Murphy is a true hero of the twentieth century. Everyone should take note of what true character, integrity and loyalty Audie gave us. Thank you Audie.
