Hotel Mumbai (2018)
Spoiled opportunity
Of course the story is real; but doubt the details are. Could have been a great story, but an hour and a half of terrorists shooting people that act like stupid sheep, really?
Realise people might not be rational in such situation. But this went completely overboard. For example, the group in the restaurant on the ground floor. Why the heck not get out of the windows instead of getting up to the sixth floor? On the way up to the sixth floor on the staff staircase they just needed to walk a few steeps down to freedom, why climb 6 floors of stairs to be trapped? You have a Russian ex elite force, did he unlearn everything to become a stupid civilian? The nanny had a shower. After things calmed down, wouldn't it be normal to change to clothes instead of walking around in a bathrobe? And so forth.
But agree with other reviews that praises the movie, that Dev Patel is excellent. He is. He shines and ends up being the only character you care about. Hence the 3 stars.
Sløborn (2020)
Sløborn - Much better than expected !
Was scrolling and found a serie that looked like the vibe from Dark and wanted to give it a chance. It was Sløborn. A fantastic serie. It is nothing like Dark though. Only have in common that many of the main characters are teens and that it is a German production. But more addictive than Dark. Bing watched Sløborn until I realised I needed to wait for release of the final 3 episodes.
This review is based on all 20 episodes/3 season. Wish there were more.
There are several layers of the story. The everyday drama is one layer. Well scripted and interesting plots. I simply had to see how they got out of the trouble that they gotten into. Some characters are unlikeable, but what they do and what motives them still makes sense.
Another layer is the island atmosphere. Sløborn is a fictive island in Germany at the Northsea close to Denmark. It has its charm with the slow pace of a small island and mixture of languages and culture. For example Husum - a town on the mainland - is a small ferry trip away, but seems as a different universe.
Of course there is also the entire storyline about how a virus spread and what it does to a society. Season 1 of Sløborn was filmed before Covid. They really nailed a lot of things; yet the scale at another level since mortality in Sløborn was higher than with Covid.
Interesting take on how civilization could end, the abyss we are looking into and only a few steps away from. Sløborn shows that a few deep scratches on the fabric of society could make it collapse.
The last episode in season 3 was a bit of a rush; but hard to make closure and wrap loose ends. I really like the ending, and was neither as expected nor hoped for. Looking more forward than backward. The 3 seasons are different in, but they fit well together. The quality of the episodes did not decline over time (as often seen). All 3 seasons were good.
Highly recommend for a rainy weekend !
True Detective: Night Country: Part 1 (2024)
False Detective
Loved first season. Could never go beyond episode 2-3 in second season. Was thrilled when I heard that fourth season was great. It isent. Though managed to watch all episodes. Time I will never get back.
Not sure where to start. The characters are all unlikeable and flat in a way that you very fast don't care about them (though the Peter Prior (Prior junior) character is played well).
The cliche characters are nothing compared to that the plot is so stupid that it hurts. It is not unbelievable. It is utterly ridiculous. And those who wrote the script apparently dont have much experience with snow, ice or dark winters. When you are just above the polar circle and last day with sunlight is Dec 17, when will you see the sun again? Hint: Solstice is December 21st/22nd.
Will never watch season 5, 6 or any other season of this pile of ....
Vortex (2022)
Good story and food for thought but with flawed logic
Ludo's wife Melanie died 27 years ago. Ludo has remarried and got a son with his new wife Parvana. But he never really moved on from the trauma. Ludo is a cop and a murder case has links to the death of his wife 27 years earlier. To solve murder cases recordings of the crime scenes are stored digitally and accessible via VR. A glitch makes it possible to Ludo to communicate with his former wife across the 27 years.
All of above is showed within the first 20 minutes or so within the first episode. Will not spoil more of the hunt for the killer which is carried on both in the present and in the past. A good love story and whodunnit with a strong sci-fi element.
It is a good story about wanting to change the past without changing the future/present. Think this philosophical element is good and brings a lot of dilemmas. And the story of grief and love is touching.
But it only works if you don't give it too many thoughts about the logic of "time travel". Every time Melanie changes things in the past, the future changes. So far so good. But the idea that it can be changed back again afterwards so the future will not be effected doesn't make sense. That could make sense if you could go even further back in the past, but that isent the case here.
And the Ludo that is here in the present has a constant amnesia. He only remembers how things were before the first change and is surprised by all the changes. That does not make any sense either. Ludo wouldn't have moved from one reality to the next. He would have lived the 27 years and known the "changes". But of course if he did that he would be a different Ludo and most likely it would only be the first Ludo that knew above the glitch. And the different Ludos would not gain knowledge across different parallel realities. So we have a Ludo that moves between the parallel worlds whereas the other characters don't. Ludo only knows the first reality before he and Melanie started to create new realities.
There are other issues as well with the logic. But if you are ok with a story where the logic is flawed like this, then it is still a good story. I am ok with that. Therefore still 8 out of 10.
The Stranger (2022)
Blown away in slow motion
Circled around this movie taking attempts to watch it. Knowing beforehand that it was slow paced. As others mentioned it is dark, gritty and slow paced. I agree. After 20 minutes I didn't think "who dunnit" but more who are whom and what side of the fence are the characters on. Then the pieces of the dark puzzle are slowly laid piece by piece while the story slowly evolves. There are no violence, gore or even a drop of blood. But the movie still gets under your skin and keeps you at suspense until the end. If you are into the mood of a slow evolving movie with a creepy theme then this a definitely a good choice.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Why not use the story instead of just the title of the book?
The book by Erich Maria Remarque was telling the meaninglessness of war. This movie fails since it tries to explain the events. All cliches with evil generals and such. I dont mind slow movies where the characters unfold, but all the characters stayed flat without any development. Somehow i ended up not caring for a single one of the characters but continued to look at my watch instead and hoping the movie soon would be over. The movie wasnt too long, it was just a poor movie. It would have been better off if it had followed the book instead of just using its title. Dont really get all the hype about the movie. Read the book instead!
Surge (2020)
Slowly loosing it?
Joseph (Ben Whishaw) is doing a amazing performance. In other reviews some come with theories of why. Not sure it is so black and white. Yes, definitely Joseph is not being an average guy towards the end. But will the life you see him live in the beginning be worth living for an entire life? Moving from a very controlled life to a life with instant pleasure. Crazy in the end of the movie or crazy in the beginning of it?
If you are a person that lives a happy life and don't question it or reflect on it. Then you might think this movie is crap. Don't waste your time on it. Nothing about being an "intelligent movie" or not. If you have this nagging feeling that things could be different, then you more easily can identify with Joseph.
A good movie exploring the borderline between norms and normality in modern society and psychological sanity.
Greenland (2020)
Nonsense
I have a bracelet that is worth nothing, but will fight for my life over it. Small meteorites hits the car doesn't matter. Meteorites hits another car and it burns lightly. Meteorites shower, "let us hide under a bridge" (great idea *sic*). We crash on Greenland and walk to the Thule base in minutes. Morena Baccarin is worth a star and makes a one star movie a two star movie (out of ten)
Archive (2020)
Very watchable
Nice movie. Enjoyed it a lot, but for those calling it deep, new, surprising, "had to watch it twice", etc, I cant help saying Ex Machina + Vanilla Sky. Or should it be with a twist of Moon? All great movies. This one wasnt bad either. But not in same league.
Lost River (2014)
Trying to make an avant-garde movie?
Love odd and strange movies. But even the odd and strange movies need to make sense within its own universe. This one doesn't.
Cutterhead (2018)
You will dislike the main character
You cant help to dislike the female lead character right away. Even before the disaster. Hollow, hysteric, superficial, unintelligent, unprofessional, selfish. Disaster movies work the best if you actually hope the characters survive.
Devs (2020)
Best series for a long time
Best series I have watched for a year or two. Yes, it is sci-fi, but if you buy in on the one main premises then the story that unfolds is true to itself. There are no major plot holes or gaps. In the little world that is created the things make sense.
Good story line, good score, nice cinematography. It doesnt go downhill midways because it went over budget. Can see in other reviews that some are annoyed about Mizuno's and the other actors's acting. I think it fits. Gives a dreamy feeling and melancholy. Suits well. This is not Jack Bauer or Mission Impossible. More along the lines of eXistenZ, Solaris and Until the end of the World.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Repeats itself and predictable
Thought it would have been good. But stays in the same loop. Trying so hard to give it a Fargo look-n-feel, but dont reach that level.
A murder is committed and the prime suspect is
- The girlfriend of the ex boyfriend. Lets race out and get her. Oh it wasnt her, who could it then be?
- The ex boyfriend. Lets race out and get him. Oh it wasnt him, who could it then be?
- Mare's ex husband. Lets race out and get him. Oh it wasnt him, who could it then be?
- The priest (too obvious). Lets race out and get him. Oh it wasnt him, who could it then be?
- The ex boyfriend again. Lets race out and get him. Oh it wasnt him, who could it then be?
- The bar owner. Lets race out and get him. Oh it wasnt him, who could it then be?
- The uncle. Lets race out and get him. Oh it wasnt him, who could it then be?
- The other uncle. Lets race out and get him. Oh it wasnt him, who could it then be?
...and so on. Of course a murder plot of ten hours or so needs a lot of suspects, but just seemed like the same templated used all the way through. Honestly, i didnt really care in the end.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Started on 9 then fell like a rock to 3
Most in here that is giving Raised by Wolves a high score are busy telling that other people don't understand it and that they only watched 3-4 episodes themselves so far. The first episode is a 9, then next few could be 7-8s and then it turns to utterly nonsense, bad story telling and cheap production.
The beautiful scenes in the beginning turns into something that could be a handheld camera in the dark for the last 3 episodes. What a shame that the budget ran out too early.
I don't mind big snakes in a sci-fi movie. Somehow I hoped that Ridley Scott would have made a crossover to Dune. Instead everybody ran around in small loops and the plot just turned into Lost where they just continued to throw in meaningless stuff without closing the gaps.
Coherence (2013)
You are about to enter The Twilight Zone
For anybody grown up with the Twilight Zone from the 80s this will be a worth to much movie.
Cherry (2021)
Unrealistic but seriously great
In so many ways this is an unrealistic movie, but oh my, it has so much sadness and depth in it ... it draws in so many ways on how movies used to be made before it all became CGI. A great love story. And a story about getting lost in life. Best movie i have seen in a year.
Travelers (2016)
Seriously poor and unengaging
12 monkeys, just without the humor, dystopia, and without getting the details right.
Started to watch since 8.1 in average. Somebody mentioned "Philip K Dick would be proud". Thought "wow, must be good". It is not!
First 1-2 episodes in season 2 seems above the rest. But otherwise it is just a compilation of the main charters running around like headless chickens despite they ought to know it all beforehand. Gave up to this nonsense mid season 2.
Idea is great (who doesn't like 12 monkeys?), but executed badly. Characters seem unengaged. Giving it 4 because of a few good punchlines once in awhile.
By the way, Philip K. Dick would not be proud. He would cry his eyes out.
OtherLife (2017)
Good story, nice twists (mini spoiler)
Good story if you are into Black Mirror (or twilight zone from the 1980's). Draw on elements from eXistenZ and Inception, but still see it as original.
Can see others write low budget, but think it was visually appealing and merely gave it a more independent/indie feeling.
A solid 8 and well above the average sci-fi.
