The Avengers (2012)
One of the smartest, wittiest, grandest summer blockbuster you will see for a long time !
Before I saw avengers I was expecting to see a action heavy film with little or no script. And now that i have seen it I can say that i was very surprised by the dialogues and the script. The script was witty, smart and well written. The main plot was of course simple, that of a man( in this case a God) wanting to take over the world, but apart from that cliché plot point the script was very good. It was more character based than plot based. The movie gave enough individual time to the heroes(other than hawkeye) in terms of screen time. The point of the film was a team assembling and that team dynamic was brilliantly written and acted. The heroes fought, they disagreed, they had different opinions to things, they had different reasons to go to war, but at the end despite their differences they came together. This team dynamic was brilliantly handled by Joss Whedon. The script was funny at times as well, Joss whedon knew that the avengers wasn't supposed to be a dark knight, it wasn't supposed to be realistic and gritty and scattered with various themes, so instead of making a mindless michael bay film he added his own unique touches which gave the movie and the characters depth while also preserving the summer blockbuster flavour. Each character played a specific part in this team, captain America played the loyal/bound by duty super soldier who turns out to be a brilliant tactician as well. Iron man provided the team with flying abilities and brilliant weaponry, thor had personal reasons to fight this battle, while HULK well he was an unstoppable monster!
The scope of this film is huge, unlike any other super hero film. The opposition that these heroes faced could not be dealt by one hero alone and hence the stakes in this movie are much higher and the heroes know that. Some realistic themes were also introduced like whether SHIELD should make nuclear weapons to protect itself from the other worldly armies, these themes were quite relevant in today's times. There were quite a few smart writing choices that whedon made that i cant talk about without giving spoilers. The acting as expected was brilliant. Robert Downey, Chris Evans, Mark Rufallo, Scarlett Johanson,Chris hemsworth and Jeremy renner were all brilliant at their roles. The black widow got more screen time then i expected but that was welcome. The action I thought was very large scale, although i think and i know many might disagree with me, but the action could have been more grander in some parts. All in all this movie was everything it was supposed to be. It balanced the script, the dialogues, the characters and the action very well. Don't compare this to the dark knight cause this is not supposed to be gritty and intense, just be happy that the movie gives to you more than you expected it to. I don't know how Marvel is going to top this but lets just hope they do.
Sherlock: The Reichenbach Fall (2012)
It doesn't take sherlock to figure out that this episode was mind-blasting!!!!! :D
So i saw the finale of sherlock season 2 today thinking it would be another good episode of sherlock, but i was wrong in all ways possible! Good is an understatement, this was definitively the best episode of television i will see this year unless of course breaking bad would pull off a stunner. Season 2 tried to portray the sherlock as more "human" and this finale completes the arc brilliantly. The acting, the direction and the writing( oh god the writing!!) were simply outstanding. The episode had a brilliant blend of drama, emotion and edge of the seat suspense. In most of sherlock episodes you know that sherlock is going to solve the crime , its just about how he does it and who is the main culprit, but this episode just kept me guessing. I had no idea what was going to happen, every second was a " will he or wouldn't he" type of moment. The final 20 minutes took the show from brilliant to whatever is much better than that. Martin freeman was brilliant in the emotional moments completely justifying peter Jackson wanting him for the hobbit and even Benedict cumberbatch got a chance to show the emotional yet reserved side of sherlock, which i think he did beautifully. All i can say is season 3 -"where are thou?"
Breaking Bad (2008)
The best show you haven't seen!!!
A story about a chemistry teacher who learns that he has lung cancer and to support his family starts preparing the drug meth from which he hopes to earn enough money.
Breaking Bad has everything going for it whether its the direction or the acting or writing. This is one of the few shows which provides such a detailed character arc of all the leads. What this show does well is blend dark humor with suspense with (occasional)action with detailed character sketches. This show is all about the details, its amazing how well the script is thought out(many scenes resort to metaphors). The moral dilemmas which each character faces in many situations throughout the 4 seasons are quite intense. Many complain that this show is slow but its this slow pace which helps to build the tension. If we didn't care about the characters then why would we care about what happens next in their life and in order for us to care about the characters we need to understand them and their mindset and that is only possible if the show has a slow pace in which each actor has time to showcase their character. In season 1 walter white is this reserved chemistry teacher who loves his family and seems like a person who wont even hurt a fly but as the seasons progress he truly breaks bad and his evil side is let loose. The marvelous thing about the show is that the supporting cast is brilliant, they are not just random people who are penned down on the script just to accompany walter white in his story but they are well thought out characters who affect the whole story.
The acting in this show is the best you will ever see. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are currently my 2 most favorite people in this world. They live the characters and give their characters life.Their are many tense moments in this show where the characters are in a difficult situations and they have to get out of them and these situations are really thrilling ,but what i find more thrilling is when the character has 2 choices to make and in most cases one choice is good and one choice is evil and the way the whole scenario and the moral dilemma is showcased really makes you just want to stand up and clap.
I truly recommend this show cause this show will absorb you into its METH world. This show might just be the best show you haven't seen!!!!!
