Can you really be wholly one thing?
5 January 2024
I really liked Bradley Cooper's take on the story of Leonard Berstein. When I realized I wasn't going to be watching the famed composed write the score to Westside Story (1961), rather what the success of that work would affect him and his family, I was all in.

All aspects of this film culminate to create a beautiful story about the lives for Leonard Berstein and his Felicia Montealegre. The overall message of the film seems to be how life can be difficult to be wholly one thing, but there is usually one thing in life that inspires us to do all that we do. We watch as Leonard tries to juggle his family life, his sexual desires, and his passion for music. We see Felicia try to balance being a mother as well as a wife and an actress. We see how it warps their relationship and takes a toll on their views of each other at times. Sometimes the things that we do every day clouds our vision on why we do what we do. It is true that to be human is to want to try new things, experience and explore the world in different ways, and to try and better yourself with the hopes you have a successful life along the way. But while you are doing all these things it's best to recognize why you are doing these things, and how what you are doing can affect those who you care for most. By placing us in the lives of Leonard and Felicia, the film leaves you feeling introspective, and wondering if you have done enough to appreciate those who help you do what you do every day.
