Asteroid City (2023)
I am impressed - it's Wes Anderson's best! A tale of the west dressed in sweet subtleness
I've been a big fan of Wes Anderson and his style since his first movie. I didn't love all of them, but I always appreciate his movies and I'm always excited to see what he does next.
I've seen my favorite Wes Anderson movies at least a dozen times each. I finished my first watch through of Asteroid City, and it is immediately my new favorite movie of his. It is a true masterpiece, and captures the essence of what I love in his movies. The acting is perfect, especially in its imperfections; the scenery is a feast to the eyes, more so because how intentionally artistic it is; and each individual frame could be it's own beautiful portrait, as in several of his movies.
The subtle humor (including several facial expressions that still make me giggle), the cadence of conversation and the quirks of each character are spectacularly combined. It's hard to go into detail because each character has some feature that I absolutely love. Not to mention, the story had me completely enthralled throughout!
I rate this a 10/10 because I love everything about it and dislike literally nothing. Thank you Wes, keep it up!!
Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005)
My son LOVES this movie, and I do too
Me and my 7-yead old son watch this movie almost weekly. We both really enjoy it, and will continue watching it all the time. The acting is great, the story is really good, there is a lot of nuance that we pick up from watching it over and over, and it's never really been boring. My favorite part is when they first open the door in space and see Saturn's rings. It is so cool! My son's favorite part is at the beginning when they are playing catch.
We also love quoting this movie! "climb off my back, and give me about 2 inches of space, would you please?!?" always makes us laugh!
We would both highly recommend this movie!
The Green Knight (2021)
So many bad reviews, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I came here after watching this and saw so many bad reviews that I felt the need to contribute. Is it slow? Definitely. Is it beautiful? Absolutely. Is it deep? Not sure yet, but I'm intrigued and will re-watch it again shortly. And when I want to re-watch a movie (especially a slow-paced one), it usually means there's something there.
I get that this isn't for everyone, but the amount of negativity was shocking. It's much different than most Hollywood blockbusters, but at least for me that's a thing I welcome with open arms.
Ultimately, I think another watch and some time to think on it will truly tell how this movie is, but I feel like it could be something special that just isn't obvious.
My advice is to go in expecting a slow pace, and keep an open mind. Don't assume your attention will be held throughout. Consider this an old story told by the fireside, and maybe you'll enjoy it like I did.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
So terribly forced...
Awesome concept, great universe, good cgi, but the the story feels incredibly unnatural. Assuming you can accept the world that was built (and it's a pretty cool world!), almost every scene just doesn't make logical sense. It's quite obviously a movie, and this makes it very difficult to become immersed in the story. I really wanted to like this in all respects, but it just doesn't feel like a plausible reality.
Fight Quest (2007)
Great show, wish there was more
Every review seems to be centered around the difference between Human Weapon and Fight Quest. As an unbiased observer (I have not yet watched Human Weapon) I can say that I absolutely love this show! The chemistry is great, the fights are real (and get as rough as I had hoped!) and it is amazing to see all the different styles.
The only problem I had with the show was that in each location, the guys only spent 5 days. While it is cool getting a snippet of different fighting styles and seeing how much they can take in during this short time allocated to them, it would be much more entertaining (and realistic for the final fight) if they would given more time to spend training.
Ever since the first episode I watched, I was hooked. I watched this show straight through and will probably watch it again. It is one of the few shows I am a huge fan of and, while I doubt I would be so lucky, I really hope they bring it back. Doug and Jimmy are awesome.
