Putovanje u Vucjak (1986)
Best TV series ever to come out of Yugoslavia
I don't expect someone to make the effort of translating and subtitling this in English, (which is sad, really)so the only people that will watch this (and all episodes are available on YouTube) will probably be those born in ex Yugoslavia, or with some relation to that part of the world.
In order to fully understand the plot, some basic knowledge of the history of WW1 is required. This series will then provide some insight into the hardships of living in country occupied by Austria-Hungary Empire, mixed with political chaos that will soon follow with various attempts of forming a functional state with other southern Slavic nations. Everything is seen from Croatian perspective, but other nationalities involved in common history can also relate.
Story (an adaptation of novella by Miroslav Krleza) covers a wide range of characters, from every layer of society, all struggling to make the best of the troubling times that were the end of WW1 in Croatia.
Characters are portaid in great detail, actors are the best of their generation, direction is flawless, and costumes and scenery precisely depict 1918.
This is truly a masterpiece of Yugoslav TV production, and if you can understand the language, (or translation becomes available) you should definitely take the time and watch this.
American Sniper (2014)
Eastwood is really losing it
I have read about this movie, prior to watching it,so I roughly knew what to expect. At the end,I was quite surprised, that it wasn't as much of a right-wing war apology and propaganda,as I thought it would be. It's a realistic display of war horrors, militants will see it as pro-war,normal people will see it as anti-war. It is simply a story of that time, told the way one simple,bible-belt,all-American,gun-crazy,southern man with no future, would see it. But I expected Eastwood to deliver a complete, solid movie, not leaving me any room for complaints on hes behalf. Instead,he gave us a documentary with extra special effects and some fancy cinematography. Being a European, all I knew about Kyle, was what I read in the New Yorker article, which was wary bountiful in details. Knowing all the things about Kyle, that he deliberately left out of the movie, leads me to believe,Eastwood played it safe, avoiding the possibility that Kyle might turn out something else, than a hero and defender of the nation. Instead,he used 2/3 of the movie on action scenes, and the rest on portraying his characters, instead of doing vice versa. And that makes this movie a fairly, large disappointment, not worthy of any artistic Oscar nominations, yet alone, awards. If he gets any,it will be another shot in the Academy awards credibility.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
A movie made for everyone, but the Star Trek fans.
I just went to see this movie, hoping it will turn out to be something more then just another action movie located in space. But,sadly for me,it didn't. If Bruce Willis had got a lead role, this could easily be Die Hard 34. There's more action then SF to be found in here. A Star Trek movie is not supposed to be a pack of fight scenes every 10 min.,followed by a few wannabe smart-humorous lines between the supporting characters, and as a cherry on top,a half naked blonde showing her goods to Kirk, just for the hell of it. Captain of the Enterprise is not a trigger happy cowboy, breaking the Prime directive as he pleases, because he started some stupid rescue mission, where his 1. officer is lowered into a volcano(couldn't't that device be beamed in?),while he and his medical officer(what is he doing there?) steal some scriptures(for what?) only to do some(again unnecessarily)scuba diving. Throughout the whole movie, story only lays out the excuses for another action scene, logic and common sense are not obligatory. This movie will,of course,be a smash-hit,because it's made to be visually appealing,to please wide masses, mostly young, perhaps create new armies of Trekkie's,ones that don't really need more from a Star trek movie then a good space blast once in a while,Spock and Uhura getting married,a bit of kung-fu,and some T&A. I grew up on Star Trek,so this movie is obviously not made for me,but for some new generation of Star trek fans.
P.S. I really doubt the phrases''Dear God'',and ''for the love of God'',will still be in use by the 2300-s. Star Trek has always been deprived of religion,so this really makes me sick. How typically American.
Prometheus (2012)
Ridley Scott directed this?
I just checked on-line,Ridley Scott directed this fancy thing and also,Bladerunner. I wasn't sure that was possible. OK,he's 30 years older, but still, people should get smarter with years,or not? This thing that i wasted 2 hours and 5 Euros on,reminds me of Japanese-Godzilla movies from the late 70's. Like it was made for no-brainer,harmless 2 hour cheap thrill, just to pass the time. Ridley Scott really damaged his reputation with this one, failing to repeat,at least, the suspense of the original Alien. And this time,he had a lot more space to work with, and less limitations, being that this was supposed to be the beginning of the whole story. Instead,he just proved to the world that it's time for his retirement. Rewiewers before me pointed out all the all his moronic mistakes,so I won't repeat that. What bugs me the most,is that,at the doorstep of 22. century,a scientist that discovers how life on earth was created, still drools over a cross like a preacher's wife from Alabama, and frase ''Jesus!!'' is still being used in conversation,i think 5 times in the movie . Bitch, please. Not too demanding teen audience should enjoy this, being a really cool made movie, with great scenes and CGI effects, but every serius,30 years and older,SF fan,is surely,as disappointed as I am. Shame on you,Ridley.
Conan the Barbarian (2011)
A fancy Iron Maiden Video
I haven't yet seen the Movie, but seeing the trailer,i have no intention. I'm sure that movie will gross a lot of money in USA and have many teenager boys going' wild about it,but the older audience should feel revolted like me by this horrible travesty that could only ruin a memory of a fantastic movie by John Millius, not follow in its path. That 1982 Conan was mystic, plot was developing slow,it really captured your attention. This one looks to be packed with effects and useless over the top-action,something made for kids and grown kids, that don't need an interesting story, but are satisfied with just a big body count. It's like they didn't want to attract older audience. This could only be a fancy Iron Maiden video, never a Conan movie. And,by the way,Hollywood studios should have some European and Asian producers that would give them insight to how movies like this one could be percept ed in those markets, not caring only about the US audience. Hollywood makes not more then a few good movies a year, the rest are all the same, like made for dummies, such as this one. There ignorance is really disappointing. Damn shame.
