Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Very good, but a little long
Parts of this movie were amazingly moving -- especially the entire Iraq sequence, including Lila, the mom who had lost her son and the scenes showing the destruction and civilian casualties. Some scenes (such as the public execution) were not really necessary and too gruesome for my taste. The scenes of burned and injured children and a dead baby were also gruesome and unpleasant. But I guess if we caused it, we ought to be willing to look at it! Parts dealing with the Bush - Saudi connections seemed to drag on too long and weren't particularly convincing. Overall, an excellent movie, though. (About as fair and balanced as Fox News, but still; it does present a view point.) The final scene (Bush's fool me once quip) was TOO hilarious!
We watched it over and over and even my Republican husband was rolling!
Chicago (2002)
pure sparkling, scintillating fun
Just sit back and enjoy the spectacle! Sure, it's light on plot. Okay, so there's not a single character in the movie to identify with; not even one that's particularly sympathetic. I'll agree that Renee and Richard are neither great singers nor dancers (I don't think they would argue that!) But for a couple of hours of joyous fun, this movie cannot be beat!
Radio (2003)
You'll love it or hate it.
This is a movie you'll either love or hate. I loved it. If you are looking for suspense, great special effects, action, sophistication, cynicism, etc. you won't find it in this movie. It is a feel good movie, sentimental, positive, uplifting. The heroes of the movie are Coach Jones (played by Ed Harris), a man of strength and integrity, and Radio (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) a mentally retarded man who finds a way to contribute to his world. I guess I didn't find this movie to be "sentimental hogwash" as so many did, because it felt very real to me. I know people like these. I've seen jocks who think it's fun to pick on the vulnerable. I've seen men of integrity stand up for the vulnerable. I've seen people who think high school football is serious business. I've seen people who know what really is important in life. Any of these people could have been people I knew. I did laugh; I did cry. I left the movie feeling good, remembering that there are people like Coach Jones and Radio in my world. If there aren't people like them in yours, you might not like the movie. If you don't like a movie that shows the better side of human nature, you'll hate it.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Fine, if you like special effects
You might like this movie if you love special effects and/or like science fiction that takes itself VERY seriously. This movie is trying to be very profound, but I was not moved. It was more confusing than the first one and not as much fun. I'm sure it would be less confusing if you saw it more than once, but it's not worth the effort to me.
