Star Trek: Discovery: Red Directive (2024)
Discovery comes back with a stunner
No spoilers here.
Wow, Discovery ties into a great TNG episode and this time with a big budget. There's nothing like an old-fashioned archeological mystery and a little adventure to soothe the Trek soul. Brilliant out of the gate.
Sonequa shines as she has really taken over the show she was always supposed to be the central character for, and Discovery is all the better for it.
Need I say this is the most cinematic thing on TV? It certainly beats the production design and VFX of most of the Trek movies.
Ultimately we are heading out to a great Indiana Jones style adventure and I'll be along for the ride, as this excellent show somehow always manages to top itself.
Star Trek: Discovery: Coming Home (2022)
Pure Roddenberry Trek
These last 3 episodes would make one of the best scifi films of the last few decades. Discovery itself has been the closest to Roddenberry's themes of any recent Trek show, leading not with nostalgia but with overall messages of communication, understanding, hope, and diversity. Fantastic Trek.
While some recent shows lean heavily on old relationships, retread stories, Discovery continues to pump out themes that go back to the purity of Trek's ideals. This episode not only helps pave the way for future Starfleet it reinforces the democratic freedom such orgaizations suggest to us by having a real-life savior of democracy in it. This will be looked on in years to come as one of the great moments in TV and the franchise.
It's hard to be more effusive than this. Rewatch this trilogy anytime you can!!
10/10.
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
The time has come to ask..is Matrix the best SF movie series ever
The time has come to ask..is Matrix the best SF movie series ever, or the best MOVIES ever?? Apologies to the Wizard of Ozs and Citizen Kanes of the world, but I am struck by the sheer weight of imagination and detail of the whole movie series. While literature has explored the ideas in the Matrix before in one state or another, have we ever seen such mindboggling, contemporary creativity outside of the French new wave in the 60s? Their structure was different, the ideas were new and they explored territories American movies didn't...how out of place the Matrix seems to me..in a world where everything entertainment has to be explained leaving the audience to fill in no gaps with their own logic and we're left with a hollow, empty feeling days after seeing the movies. You may hate the Matrix, disagree with its storytelling, but you just won't forget it..its not possible, and unlike much of the vaunted and current LOTR trilogy, its is totally relevent to modern living and thought processes. I will only grow in my understanding of the whole series, I'll only learn to appreciate it more and in hindsight. Its the sign of a true classic, and the series has instantly become that.
