The Constant Gardener (2005)
Western vanquish of Africa
I went to cinema without having high expectations for this movie. I had my fears that this will be something a la "English patient", but, boy, I was surprised. Shame on me! The Constant Gardener is a very good movie that is about world's betrayal and constant screwing of Africa and its people; the medical companies doing all kind of legal and illegal experiments on ill Africans...
Beside the obvious political agenda, this movie is also about love between a static, but good-hearted politician and a human-rights activist.
I will not mention the plot, but I will just write that the politician is a person who, while working in Kenya, ignores poverty and misery by taking care of his plants.
I would say that we all (in the West, at least) are constant gardeners, who do ignore and tolerate injustice in Africa - injustice done by Western powers, organisations and companies.
Wonderful performances by Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes. The images of Africa are stunning.
Secret Passage (2004)
Important story of the Christian inquisition against Jews
Since I know previous works of the Bosnian director Kenovic (Kuduz and The Perfect Circle), I really had high expectations for "Secret Passage". Well, I can say I was not disappointed, au contraire, this movie is really nicely done, from the manuscript, cinematography to acting. I was stunned by Katherine Borowitz who plays Isabel, but also by Hannah Taylor-Gordon who plays Victoria. These two actresses have fantastic expression that adds an extra value to this very good movie. I am glad John Turturro found his place in the movie, because I think he is a great actor with great potential, that could and should be used in projects not usual for his roles. But although he did good job, I believe he was somewhat misplaced in the movie, but I am not sure... maybe because I am used to watch him in more contemporary films.
I loved the story. It shows us how the Jewish were treated in the Christian Europe, when the witch hunt and Inquisition were almost national sports.
Kenovic has great eye for details and aesthetics. The scenes are wonderfully set, and I enjoyed every moment in and around Venice. I can warmly recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in history and beautifully shot films.
It bothers me that Ademir Kenovic does not direct movies more often (his mostly a producer), because he is very talented director.
8 out of 10.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Wonderful experience, this Amelie!
Amelie is a young woman with innocent eyes and grand fantasy, who believes that her life's obligation is to help people in trouble.
In a way, that is only characteristic to Amelie, she begins the work of a good Samaritan - helping a blind man picture the surroundings, defending the sluggish salesman from his boss and helping the poor souls who are unhappy in love... Helping others, she is true master, who recklessly fight the greatest difficulties, but when the shine of love hits her face, her known self-esteem bursts in hundreds of pieces.
I can assure you, that Amelié is one of the most creative movies I have ever seen. This movie warms your heart, even the penguins in the cold Antarctic. The movie shines with great energy, which is unselfishly spread by fantastic Audrey Taoutou as wonderful Amelie. The photography of this movie is great, just as manuscript, acting and instruction. The music in Amelie is just a story for its self (Bosnian saying), i.e. it gives a special flavour to Parisian atmosphere.
This movie is filled with small details and pieces which we all have experienced at certain point in our lives, but never paid attention to them. I think that this movie deserved Oscar for Best Foreign Movie (which went to Bosnian "No Man's Land"), because this was the best European (if not world's) movie in 2002. I mean, what can I say, the conclusion is and must be - Amelie is phenomenal work, showing that French and European film has a bright future. Every person in the world should see this movie and capture a glimpse of the universal beauty. Magnificent! Fantastic!!
P.S. Sorry for possible faults, English is not my native language.
