The Dukes of Hazzard (2005)
How uninspired this movie is!
I was so disappointed in the movie for many reasons. I had hoped that the director, the same as "Super Troopers" had at least brought some of that movie's enthusiasm and sense of fun to this film. I was wrong to have such hopes... This film was flat and uninspired, with not even a bit of the sense of "Gee, I love to drive this darned car!" that the TV series always had.
The blame first goes to the director, who was obviously having a string of bad days. The second responsible person would likely be the cinematographer and/or the editor, who made the car chases boring and blurry, and even difficult to follow. Orange blurs just aren't enough to make a scene, guys. Yes, the car is one of the stars, but Vin Diesel's car in the "Fast and Furious" was more exciting... yawn! Then, the absolute miscasting of Seann William Scott was disgraceful. The casting was sad overall with Burt Reynolds phoning in his performance, and lo and behold, it was obviously a party line call since Willie Nelson did nothing for the role of Uncle Jesse. Where did the find that loser playing Roscoe Coltrane? The only thing that seemed like the Duke boys would run from about him was his breath.
What a shame to dishonor such a silly but fun TV show! Anyone wondering why Hollywood is losing at the box office? I'm not!
Lost (2004)
Seen at a film festival. Worth a look!
Although Dean Cain was not among the candidates for the lead, he is the perfect lead for the role! His performance is multi-layered and intense.
The villain, played by a favorite villain actor, is well written and well acted. The premise of the movie does keep you guessing, and the surprise ending is, well, a surprise.
Refreshing, considering the studio product these days. No market research garbage here! (Sorry, suits!)
The director takes some chances that really pay off, and for an indie, it comes across very well done and satisfying!
The movie is, overall, quite well made for a first-time director. See it if you can!
Hellboy (2004)
Absolutely surprising! Better than, well...Hell, boy.
What a lot of fun this movie was! Intelligent script, very good acting, and just a great ride! The only down side to the film was the obvious lack of funding to "polish" the CGI in post-production. It wasn't distracting to the enjoyment of the movie, but I would have loved to see what another $5-10 million budget could have done for the finished product.
It is not important that there are no "big names" in the movie. The acting and the script kept the film going, kept it interesting and what a relief to have a main "hero-villain" that you find yourself caring about. The comedy, which only serves to add depth to the characters, was not goofy or stupid, unlike other films recently (Daredevil, beware) Recommendation: Go, see it, and have a great time.
