Chelsea Handler: Revolution (2022 TV Special)
7/10
Funny stuff.
24 January 2023
To anyone reading these reviews in order to determine whether or not they might enjoy watching this: Remember that the first rule of comedy consumption is DON'T TAKE THE COMEDIAN SERIOUSLY. If you don't heed this rule, you'll not only risk hindering your enjoyment of the show, you also might incur a world of butthurt for yourself. Ms. Handler does not hate men, not even straight white ones. It doesn't mean she shouldn't make fun of them. And when she *acts* like she's angry at them and hates them, it makes the bits even funnier. The only thing that I, as a straight white man, found offensive was when she said something like "I know you're not all like that." I already knew you knew, Chelsea. You didn't have to dumb it down for me. (And the ones who need it probably aren't going to heed it anyway.)

The Heart, She Holler (2011–2014)

Ridiculous
19 September 2022
If someone dared David Lynch to make a show about rednecks that would be the weirdest, silliest, most salacious production ever, it would be this show. There's gore galore, sexual depravity, and rapid fire wordplay that will make your head spin (watch with subtitles so you don't miss any of it). The cast does a great job, especially Kristen Schaal -- but her replacement, Amy Sedaris, is even better. She can do grotesque like nobody's business. And Judith Roberts as Meemaw -- OMG, hilarious AND terrifying!

In short: You will either love it or hate it. Is it utterly brilliant or utterly stupid? Yes.

Pui Pui Molcar (2021– )

Trippy

Imagine a world where cars are sentient creatures who just happen to be guinea pigs -- meet the molcars. Humans are humans only when they're inside a molcar, otherwise they're plastic figurines. The molcars have steering wheels and drivers' seats but it isn't clear if they really need to be driven. The cheerful world of molcars will seem logical if you just relax and accept it. Fantastic stop-motion animation, a real work of art -- and it won't take much of your time. I'm going to watch every episode again. Pui pui!

Above average horror
9 January 2022
No super-twisty plotline here, but good solid filmmaking and cast, and a deliciously oppressive creepy vibe throughout. An illegal immigrant finds her life going from bad to worse even before the supernatural starts happening. If you're the type who needs explanations, you won't find many of them here. Sometimes isht just happens and you have to deal with it. The "reveal" is delightfully weird.

Shelley (2016)

Understated
18 October 2021
Sometimes it's nice to have a dessert that's not too sweet, and sometimes it's nice to see a horror movie that doesn't really have a lot of horror in it.

More a dark drama rather than a horror movie, Shelley's focus is on the interaction between the two key characters -- one with a desperate desire to be a mother after repeated failures, and the other with a willingness to make great sacrifices in order to build a life for herself and her only child. The plot builds upon this background of grief and yearning. The acting is superb, the dialog always natural and believable. The horror does eventually come, not with a bang but, well, a click. You'll see what I mean.

An excellent film, I wish the horror genre contained more like this.

Nothing to add, just trying to bring the average down.

Terrible script, terrible acting. Nicholas Cage is, with occasional exceptions, a terrible actor. Nobody else was much better. It was all too easy too imagine the entire cast bursting out in laughter at how bad it all was.

Good idea

Good idea but the cast wasn't up to the task. There can be no real surprises in a film like this, so it's all about execution (no pun intended). This just wasn't up to snuff (intended that time, haha).

Not good
25 April 2021
I didn't expect much, just some goofball superhero satire with a few laughs. I can only surmise that the producers blew the budget on the big name cast and couldn't afford to hire any competent comedy writers. I'm not a comedy snob -- I enjoy The Three Stooges -- but this just wasn't funny. Whatever you lovers of this film were smoking, please share.

Unremittingly bleak

This isn't a conventional science fiction film, or even a conventional film. It's an opportunity to wallow in utter hopelessness. If that's not your thing, you should skip it. I happened to have loved it.

Aargh
12 October 2020
Usually when a film has polarized reviews, I see this as a sign that there's something good about it that most people just aren't getting. But not this time. While the story idea has merit, the acting, script, and direction are all just so far below par that I have to throw my lot in with the low reviewers. I love horror so much that I'm very tolerant of flaws. But this was just bad, bad, bad.
