College (2008)
Really good, if drunk.
My husband and I watched this hammered and really enjoyed it. I think that you need to be in an "altered state" to have a good time with it. I want people to understand that this is a silly little movie that isn't meant to be taken seriously.
Do not expect Citizen Kane, much less Animal House. But it definitely has it's moments! I would say, "Two enthusiastic thumbs up!"
I totally have a crush on Drake Bell, as does my hubby.
Kevin Covais acquits himself well, to my surprise. And that's about it! A nice silly romp, if you don't expect much. I was very pleasantly surprised with the depth of production value.
The script.... Well, the script isn't much, but there are some terrific moments. Not spoiling, the "body shots" scene is HILARIOUS! Which you would be able to tell from the trailer.
ps. I am reviewing this immediately after watching, which means that I'm still WAY tipsy. Thank gods for spell check.
pps. It might be good even if not drunk. Who knows?
How I Met Your Mother (2005)
Don't let the review fool you, it's a good show!
What can I say? I'm a sucker for Neil Patrick Harris. He is, without a doubt, a funny funny guy. Anyone ever see his stellar job in Starship Troopers? He's the type of smarmy guy who I love to be friends with and has all of the best one liners on the show. I'm not actually all that interested in Ted, who the show is nominally about. I think that like Meredith on Grey's Anatomy, he's a whiny little person(rhyming with 'stitch') who can't wake up and see that he has a great life. I mean really. A good job, wait... What does he do again? Is his job like Chandler's on Friends? Great friends who support him in whatever he does, and a seemingly endless line of girls looking to hook up with him, a nice apartment. (ok, it's not a terrific apartment, but better than mine) The ridiculous situations that constitute each show really make it worth while, especially Barney's "help" for Ted.
"Have you met Ted?"
Gunner Palace (2004)
Good, albeit rather disturbing.
I saw a preview DVD when I was at National Guard annual training. It was after we had had classes that week on what to expect(ie, what to do in a convoy, rules of engagement, what an IED-improvised explosive device is likely to look like) if/when we go over to Iraq, so it was nice to see a "real" look at what is/was going on.
The part I really liked was the fact that it let the soldiers be who they really are. Kids, mainly under 25 and most under 21. Kids who joined for all sorts of reasons, but most who joined so they could do something that everyone dreams of. Going to college. It's hard to find something I didn't like, but the best/worst I can do is complain that the music should have been quieter so we could hear the soldiers more clearly, or had an on screen subtitle the whole time.
At one point one of the soldiers is asked if he still feels proud to be a soldier, and he thinks about it. "Sometimes, not often". So often when the soldiers are being interviewed they are hard pressed to look at the interviewer or the camera, instead looking off the side, or up at the sky, blinking hard to keep the tears back. I agree with the film-makers that it would be better off on TV. Personally, I believe that it should have been on TV less than a day after it was shot.
I think that it's an interesting watch, and I give it a hearty recommendation.
Here's to Gunner Palace, 2005. Do one that shows the war after it is "over".
Dudley Do-Right (1999)
Quite enjoyable...
What people fail to realize is that Brendan Frasier is an incredibly gifted comedic physical actor. This and George of the Jungle are my absolute two favorite performances. I am still pretty dang young, not even mid-twenties, but I grew up on the cartoons, which were shown along with the Rocky and Bullwinkle ones. Brendan does an admirable job of keeping Dudley stupid, but smart. If you know what I mean. True, I am not a fan of Snidely, but you're not supposed to be. Sarah Jessica Parker, doing her own singing I might add, does an incredible version of sweet, dopey Nell. (that is her name, right?) Very enjoyable, to repeat myself. Horse, as Horse, act's just as I would expect. And I don't know how snidely ever ends up making money, considering the fact he has all those henchmen who don't want to be paid minimum wage.
