Bowling for Columbine (2002)
The truth
I know everyone has a right to their own opinion, but please listen to me when I say this: This documentary is pure fact. The people who produced "Bowling" would not have let this movie be released if every fact in this movie were not double checked. Of course, Moore does offer his opinion and offer it alot, but he backs up any facts he presents. This movie was hilarious but sad to me. It`s sad that this kind of stuff is happening and that we don`t do anything to stop it. But first you have to believe that it`s actualy happening. Go to Moore`s website and read his letter to non-believers where he provides links, footage and visable proof of many disputed facts. Overall this movie was a blow to the face but extremely thought provoking and one of the best films I`ve ever seen.
Two of Us (2000)
One of the best Beatles films without the Beatles in it!
Very Slight Spoiler
This movie (despite being only on TV) is absolutely excellent. I didn`t really pay attention to the differences in looks or accents, so I can`t really comment on that. The acting in this was so good I had to pinch myself and say "Remember, it`s only a movie, this DIDN`T REALLY HAPPEN". As I sat and listened to Harris and Quinn talk, I knew that it was exactly what John and Paul would be talking about had they actually had this meeting. The offhanded comments and burns from John were right on with his character(especially in the restaurant!), as was his depression while Paul was very easy going and laid back. Both actors did and excellent job and I was thrilled to have seen this movie. It`s a wicked experience for any Beatles fan. And prepare for a few surprises!
Clue (1985)
Best mistake I ever made
My friend had seen it and told me I`d love it. I was unsure. Then she told me it had Tim Curry. So I was willing to try, being a person who`d endure anything just to glimpse Tim. I was not expecting great things. So it came on one night and I decided to tape it. I watched. And now I`m hooked. This movie is uproarisly funny with literaly millions of jokes and memorable lines. I don`t think there is one bad thing I could say about this movie. Well...except about the ending...but I don`t want to give that away!
The Meaning of Life (1983)
True to the show
If you haven`t seen the show this may be considered a spoiler as to the plot layout of the movie.
Out of all three MP movies, I felt this stayed true to the show with a bunch of somewhat interlocking skits where as the other two had more of a constructed storyline and plot. This did not make me enjoy the film any less. I truly enjoyed the movie and thought it racy good fun. Any fans of the original series will enjoy this movie.
Shock Treatment (1981)
An accident!
Shock Treatment was an accident. There, now it`s out. While Richard O`Brien DID plan a follow up to Rocky Horror (which actualy bombed in the box office but soon got itself a cult following) this was not what he had in mind. We won`t go into his original idea, but in 1980-1981 there was a SAG strike, thus causing problems for O`Brien and crew. Also, they had numerous budget cuts. Sarandon requested a considerable amount of money to return which the budget couldn`t allow, Bostwick was uninterested and Curry felt he could not handle an American accent. So at the last minute, this is what came out of it. And Richard himself will tell you it is not a sequel, not a prequel but an equal to Rocky. I do agree that it doesn`t match RHPS as a film but it`s delightful none the less. I think you just need to sit down and watch it once more before you pass judgement. Don`t look at it as the RHPS sequel, just look at it as a film. And enjoy.
Life of Brian (1979)
A contreversal masterpiece
This movie is indeed a barrell of laughs. The Python`s decided that The Meaning Of Life didn`t push it far enough and so out came this. With a bit of help from their good friend George Harrison and his production company, they decided to push the envelope to the final limit by making this movie. I loved it, though I prefer The Holy Grail to this. For those who think they can handle a bit of scandle then pick up this movie and laugh.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Not for the weak of heart
There`s going to be very mild spoilers
It`s true. Everyone`s heard of it. And many will agree that it`s the best cult movie ever. I would be one of them. Actualy, best movie ever. Now just a warning, if you are homophobic or have any problems with gay people or transvestites or incest, don`t even bother picking up this movie. Also steer clear if you are adverse to pelvic thrusting, drugs, singing (good or otherwise), partial nudity or swearing of any kind. Everyone knows the story, and everyone who has seen the movie will know all that goes on. You either like it or you don`t. But don`t hold it against the Rocky Horror obsessed if you are among the latter. A wicked movie in my opinion. Well worth watching again and again.
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Corny but fun!
Despite this film being more than a decade older than I am, it remains one of my favorites. I have not really seen any of the early Frankenstein movies in their entirety but felt that this movie payed great homage with the film being in black and white and with the wonderful sets. The acting was superb yet the jokes were very corny. But so much so that they were appealing. A must see for any fan of parody or anyone just looking for a good laugh. Five stars
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
A mockery of Arthurian legand!
And jolly good fun! With hilarious and memorable lines, MP`s trademark animation sequences and the constant jokes, this is a classic that will forever live in infamy. The Python`s take a well loved story and twist it until it comes out "Pythonized" so watch out if you are a famous historian! Five stars!
A Hard Day's Night (1964)
A behind the scenes look at the fab four
I think this movie was trying to document a day in the life of The Beatles but Dick Lester decided that it had been done and got himself a plot. Involving Paul`s grandfather, a hilarious old mixer who goes about and causes trouble. Of course, you know that if it`s the Beatles, there`s going to be music (despite the fact that they`re only miming along to the soundtrack). My only problem was they re-used a few songs in the end sequence. Of course, they could only use songs from the soundtrack and it would be wrong to expect John and Paul to write that many songs for the one album. Overall, this film is a brillant masterpiece that I can`t wait to see again. (Also, if you can, buy a new version on VHS or DVD and watch the extra bonus documentary "Things We Said Today" for an insight to how it all came about)
