Coppers (2010)
The thin blue line
This is another prime example of the British doing it better. The Americans have Cops, my home country has several ripoffs but no country can top this. Raw policing. It isn't all teary eyed "Of Duty and Service" that you usually see, it's just normal people in uniform here for our benefit. The criminals aren't murders, they're idiots who got drunk and mostly in for something related to drugs, which seems to be a common theme these days. Hysterical at times, tragic in others, grippingly real the whole time. The little look of a cop sighing as a woman is arrested for over the 50th time is heart wrenchingly sad and makes you consider what a tough job it must be, this show gives a fantastic insight into policing.
Alien³ (1992)
Give it a plobbing chance.
Rather than being an uninspired "OMG they killed people" or "It's so boring" review, how about we get a fresh perspective?
Yes they killed off Newt, Hicks and Bishop, so what? Is this an adventure series where people are saved and surrounded by rainbows? NO! This a movie about murderous aliens! And this movie in itself is about letting go and fighting the beast within. And if they didn't die, what would've this movie turned into? Hicks the unstoppable marine, Bishop the faithful and technical friend, Newt the little girl who never gets killed and always needs rescuing.
The movie is dark and moody. Exactly, it was the logical step. You can paraphrase "We got tactical smart missiles, phase plasma pulse rifles, RPGs. We got sonic, electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, we got sharp sticks." from Aliens with " we ain't got no entertainment center, no climate control, no video system, no surveillance, no freezers, no f*cking ice cream, no rubbers, no women, no guns." The setting and theme are well done although the alien is not, the cgi falling flat quite a bit. When it wasn't, however, it was the usual standard of fear inducing black monster that it is.
Bringing it back down to one alien with no weaponry is a smart move. Aliens aren't as scary when you're surrounded by marines with guns rather than a single alien surrounded by rapists and thugs.
The religious setting is interesting, with Dillion delivering a eulogy that was awe surprising at the funeral. The characters suit their environment, and the British influence was a nice change to generic 20 yr old Americans.
The plot also brought the series to a logical and beautiful conclusion (If you don't count 4...), instead of a mech suit and giant alien fight Ripley confronts the company that was just as bad as the Alien at times. She fights the Alien within as well as the one running around the murky tunnels.
Not as good as 1 and 2, but it is not the reincarnated version of Hitler which everyone seems to think it is.
Hulk (2003)
Wrong market, right idea.
I feel bad for this movie, it was destined to be disliked
For a start, it's a re-adaption of a comic which is never done well enough for die hard fans of them leading to them being angry with the films crew. It also had the problem of being to complicated for a relatively simple audience who expect blockbuster to equate to "more things blowing up"
From an objective stand point, this a fine movie that is beautifully composed and deals with many themes and a gripping plot. The CGI is not as bad as everyone seems to think it is, I don't watch a movie to see a green man constructed from images but from his character, his dialog, his personality. The comic book style editing and interesting soundtrack go quite well with this adaption of the once famous Hulk.
Instead of a traditional blockbuster which would've been a fast paced action flick with unnecessary humor, it was a movie with depth that made you think, slightly. (It is a movie about a green man in purple shorts lest we forget)
Compared to it's reboot filled with clichéd characters and a predictable ending between two biological beasts, one using his powers for good and the other for evil. He has to face something more than the US army, the source of his evil.
