Rome (2005–2007)
Senatus populesque Romanae!
29 August 2005
This series is off to a stellar start! I was VERY impressed by the first episode. True, a great many characters were introduced, but what do you expect? You have to get the pieces onto the board before the game can begin. I'm really looking forward to where it goes. I'm a history buff with a fascination for Greek/Roman/Byzantine history. "Alexander" was dreadful. I couldn't even watch the first episode of "Empire" without turning it off. But this... this looks good. Now let's get a movie based on Turteltaub's fine book "Justinian". All in all fantastic. I hear that it's only a mini-series slated for twelve episodes. That's a pity. I'd like to see a regular series set in this world. Excellent all around to everyone involved!

Sunrise (1927)

What an astounding movie!
1 August 2005
This is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive films I've ever seen! Nearly perfect in construction, wonderfully executed, flawlessly acted and worth every penny I paid to get it off Ebay.

The film presents the story of a man on a farm who is involved in an illicit affair with a woman from the City. She eventually talks him into killing his wife so they can be together. The man goes to do the dirty deed and... well, you'll just have to see what happens to believe it. No description that I can provide can do it justice.

If "Citizen Kane" is the culmination of all movie making techniques in the early "Talkie" era, then "Sunrise" is the culmination of all movie making techniques during the silent era. It is a real tragedy that Murnau didn't live long enough to make more movies. After seeing this film, you'll understand what a treasure the world lost when he died. Now let's get out there and find a copy of "Four Devils"!

Stop it ten minutes before the end!
14 January 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This was a very, very fine film. I would easily give it 9 out of 10. Except... well, they screwed up with the last ten minutes of the movie. That drags it down to about, say, 7 1/2 out of 10. Not nearly so good. Beyond the ending, the acting was quite fine, particularly Jordan Brower (who reminds me so much of my true love's personality, it's not even funny). It does seem to be a reasonably accurate portrayal of street kid life as well (I know because most of my friends are street rats). But then we have that ending... *SPOILER WARNING!* Why, oh why, is it that so many gay themed movies have to have tragic ends where one or the other of the main characters ends up dead? I was particularly miffed about it in this film, cause it served no point. One could have just as easily kept the dead character not dead and given it a perfectly fine ending, but NO! Buncha tragedy obsessed queens... :)
