Emergo (2011)
Good Found Footage
I watched this movie without great expectations, and i ended up liking it a lot. It's definitely more of the same things horror fans are used to, but that doesn't mean it's not good. The movie is not great or fantastic, but it is very nice, a good addition to the most prolific sub-genre in horror last years, the "found footage" genre, all of them sons of "Paranormal Activity" and grandsons of "The Blair Witch Project".
The movie follows the story of a "scientist" and his crew who investigate cases of paranormal activity with the best equipment science can get. The entity on this movie is pretty busy, since the team enters the house they start to experience paranormal craziness for all over the house. So, as they install all the equipment, the supernatural being(or non-supernatural thing, as the scientist explains), does all kind of things. The whole movie is recorded by the cameras in the house and other cameras they carry all time with them, and they had a really good job with that, it almost fooled me, almost...
As the time passes and the ghost starts to get more and more bold, the lead scientist starts to figure out what's happening in the house, based on the family story. He explains the situation as a case of poltergeist, a manifestation of the human mind, that goes out of control and start to be violent, in that case, the daughter's mind was the responsible.
After some easy scares and cool effects, the movie take his path to a dramatic ending. In an interview, the Father gives up the whole story about the death of his wife, mother of his kids. That was the best part of the movie, and Kai Lennox (the father, Alan White), really did a great job on his acting. But, as a good horror, the dramatic part was followed by a nice display of SFX, very "Poltergeist" stuff, with lots of people flying across the room, and bodies lifting in the air.
As i wrote in the beginning, the movie is not original, great or revolutionary for the sub-genre, but it's for sure a movie worth watching, at least if you are a horror fan, like me. I can forget to say, "Emergo" isn't a mainstream movie, so they deserve my respect for the good work.
[Rec]³: Génesis (2012)
What a wedding...
At the first time i watch REC, i was really scared as i wasn't in a long time. But at the second time i got scared too, and the same in the third time i watched the movie. That was the great thing about REC, it was a truly horrifying movie, despite of not giving explanations and being a found footage movie. When REC 2 came out, i had big expectations, because the first one was already one of my favorite movies from all time and had its space on my collection. But the movie was totally a disappointment to me. Bad acting, bad script, a totally failed attempting to recreate the tension and fear from the first one and a terrible explanation for the Zombies (not so original as some people insist to say, just go watch Supernatural guys) and some more stuff that i don't remember. When i heard that they had two more REC's on the way, i wasn't excited anymore, but i just couldn't believe that one of the best horror movies i've ever seen was dying. Despite of many comments i've read before, REC 3 does have relation with the other movies, even a sutile one, that only those with good memory will notice. In the first movie, they told us about a dog that went to a veterinarian, and that veterinarian appears to be Koldo's uncle. But besides that, the movie itself follows a total different way from its predecessors. If REC 1 is a movie based on FEAR, (so is the second, but it failed), this one is a movie based on VIOLENCE. The director decided to show a good old fashioned make up gore on screen than lots of tension. That allowed him to put some comedy in the movie and that in my opinion was the biggest mistake, the humor. The funny scenes took out all the tension the movie could've left, so, besides of some easy scary scenes, the movie definitely doesn't make us cry for our mommy. But it will surely make some people close their eyes in some of the most gruesome/awesome gore scenes i've seen in a while. Damn, those Europeans love some gore, and i'm not talking about that CGI bulls*** like we see in The Walking Dead. The movie also add some stuff to the "mitology" of REC. The reflections of the zombies looks like the Medeiros girl from the first two movies, and that is scary like hell. I don't have nothing to complain about the characters, i found them very charismatic actually. Koldo and Clara's wedding was really awesome, it's very sad what happened to them... With all that violence and demon possessed zombies, REC 3 brings to us the closest that a Zombie movie can ever get to a Love Story without looking full retarded.
