BigBug (2022)
Really enjoyable and better than I expected
It's Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie and he is the guy who directed "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" and "Alien: Resurrection". Also his debut movie was "Delicatessen" so it's complicated and you have been warned.
It's also a Netflix Original movie and I don't expect much from theese. I was positively surprised here: BigBug is quite enjoyable both as comedy and speculative fiction.
It starts a bit like "The Jetsons" world soap opera (or maybe sitcom) with all the wrong people arriving to Alice suburbian house when she just wants to have little tête-à-tête with Max. You know the drill: his son, her daughter, her ex-husband with his new "secretary" and even a neighbor and her cloned dog. From here everything starts to get complicated - something strange is happening outside, communicators are not working and soon the house is closed by home AIs that have a programmed emergency code to protect their people.
It is not the most nuanced scifi world ever and we only learn a little about it and it's history, mostly through small mentions in the dialogues. But once again: it's enjoyable and complex enough. What we have here is pretty interesting divide - AIs in all shapes and forms are sort of robotic companions and servants with are programmed to have in mind peaple safety even against their will; Yonyx on the other hand are unified "race" of androids who are trying to rule the society on the base of their superiority. With this premise and with unpredictable humans on top BigBug could have been a really interesting SF movie about the role of artificial intelligence in human society, or another derivative movie about the dangers of technology. Jean-Pierre Jeunet choose third way with distinctive esthetics and not giving up on sitcomish soap opera vibes. The effect is sometimes irritating and always weird but in all quite fresh look on it's genre an I can honestly recommend it to all of you who are not afraid of its strangeness.
7,5/10 stars for me and sincire advice not to be discouraged by negative reviews and try it if you want something else.
