The Boys (2019– )

A little bit of everything
28 June 2022
The Boys is something very rare. A program that is entirely its own. Sure, it takes advantage of the current love of super hero based stories, but it has its own unique twist on the norm.

The Boys is gritty, dark, exciting, and packed with action but still finds room for a sense of humor in its story and characters. Sometimes the visuals and grit go a bit too far but that is just a part of its uniqueness.

The only negative I have regarding the series is that they never give the audience enough episodes per season although what you get in each episode supports the concept of quality over quantity.

Definitely NOT for a young audience, The Boys always delivers for fans of action and/or super heroes.

Loved and Hated
9 March 2022
They are few and far between but this is one of those stories that I loved enough I will likely watch it again and again even though I so hated what fate did to the characters I so enjoyed. I almost couldn't watch what was happening to the people that (thanks to good character development) I had gotten to admire but I would go through it with them again in a heartbeat. Then again I find that there are few if any parts played by Sam Elliot that I don't feel a connection with.

I Liked it a Little

If you've seen "Hardcore" with George C. Scott or any of the many movies like it, you'll recognize the plot similarities quickly. It's far from totally original in its story line but then, with all the remakes and reboots and, well you know, at least it's a new take.

I love Michael Madsen, Richard Dreyfuss and Taryn Manning so I decided to check this one out. It will very likely not even get talked about in the restrooms of any of the awards shows but it was entertaining to me.

I am very happy to see Mr. Dreyfuss back on the screen (although it's selfish of me to see him have to come out of retirement) and his character was played with the same strength and subtleties that are truly his forte.

Taryn Manning put in a good performance but Michael Madsen was a bit dryer than usual. I don't know if it was because he wasn't happy to be in the film or if it was poor directing or what but I've certainly seen Mr. Madsen put in much better performances.

Would I recommend this movie to my friends? I would say yes but with the caveat that they need to expect a movie that they may or may not want to watch again but I personally enjoyed having seen it.

Would I watch it again? Probably not for a long time but, being a cinephile, I watch a lot of movies others would not (I almost hate to admit that I've seen both "Refer Madness" and "Plan 9 from Outer Space" more than once. Not much more but still) so it is a possibility.
